Just in time for Black Friday, Radisson announced a great offer where you can purchase up to 80,000 points with a 100% promotion. If you go all in, this means you can end up with as many as 160,000 points — at a rate of 0.35 cents apiece. While this offer may not make sense for anyone — and I don’t recommend purchasing points speculatively — this promotion is saving my family a significant amount of money on an upcoming vacation.
This past summer, Radisson opened up a brand new hotel in Aruba, called the Radisson Blu Aruba. While the property isn’t right on the beach, it’s only a few minute walk, and still offers a large pool complex. All bedrooms are 2 and 3-bedroom suites, so for my family of four this works out great — especially since the two bedroom suite includes a king bed and then two twin beds in a separate bedroom (perfect for my two kids).
The property costs 75,000 points per night and while I already have enough points for a four night stay, I was going to pay out of pocket for the first two nights. This was going to cost me $477 per night (plus tax, which comes out to approximately $600 a night). While this is a good amount of money, it’s during peak time and made it so I didn’t have to switch hotels.
Now, with this current promotion, I can purchase points for those two nights. Fortunately, I have 26,000 points left in my account, so to cover those two nights only requires me to purchase an additional 62,000 points. This is because with the bonus, I’ll actually earn 124,000 points. To purchase the points required (62,000 points plus the 100% bonus) will cost me $434.
This means for the two nights total, I’ll only be paying $434 — or $217 per night. And when using points to redeem for a free night, there’s no additional taxes or fees charged.
Now, even if I didn’t have orphaned points in my account, purchasing the full number of points still would have been a great opportunity. So, if you are looking to travel during peak dates where a Radisson property is expensive during your dates, look to see if purchasing points would in fact save you money.
While this won’t be the case for everyone, this particular promotion is saving me $766 on those two nights!
