A few days ago I posted about an awesome way to save 20% off an Amazon purchase, up to $100. At that time you could purchase Amazon gift cards and get the $100 off. And while that was a great way to save on Amazon purchases for the future, that loophole has unfortunately been closed. Fortunately though, for those who already took advantage of this offer yesterday or the day before, you can take advantage of it again! For some reason, when they closed the loophole they also re-activated the promotion. And if you didn’t jump on the promo a few days ago, you can still take advantage too. Everyone just needs to reactive the promotion! Reminder – this promotion is only for those with an American Express Membership Rewards earning credit card. You just need to apply 1 Membership Reward point to your order.
Even though you can no longer purchase Amazon gift cards, you can still purchase third-party gift cards. Some of these includes gift cards AirBnB, GAP, Lowe’s, Nordstrom, Olive Garden, Sephora, Southwest Airlines, Starbucks, Uber, Ulta Beauty, Whole Foods, Lyft, etc. You can search for all merchant gift cards here.
Steps to take advantage:
- If you haven’t already linked your American Express card to your Amazon account, you can do that here. You then need to activate the promotion here.
- Shop at Amazon.com and add up to $500 worth of products (which must be sold and shipped by Amazon.com) to your Shopping card. Many merchant gift cards work, so you can go ahead and search for merchant gift cards here.
- On the payment page, select your linked Membership Rewards earning credit card. At the bottom of the payment page you’ll see all your linked accounts where you can use points (Chase and Amex). Select your American Express Membership Rewards Points account and enter the number of points you want to use towards your purchase. Since I do not like redeeming my points at Amazon (due to the low redemption value), I entered just 1 cent which means 1 point will be applied. For the promotion to apply, the minimum amount required is only 1 point! Do not do full points as it is not a good value!
- On the checkout page, you’ll see the 1 point applied and the 20% taken off. No promotion code needed!
And since this promotion doesn’t require a coupon code, you are able to combine it with any codes that surface! You might also be able to take advantage of any Amazon Prime Day discounts too! Just remember to activate the promotion and apply 1 Membership Reward point.

Is this a one time purchase ? Can i do multiple purchase till the discount adds up to $100 ?

HMMPHH! I followed the steps, but when attempting to register for the promo on Amazon, they gave me this error: “Thank you for your interest. Unfortunately you are not eligible for this offer.”
Wouldn’t take my SPG card at all.
When I then tried my Amex Everyday card, I got the “not eligible” msg (above).
@Lindy – It wouldn’t take SPG since it is not an american express membership reward earning card. It should, however, take your Amex EveryDay card. These promotions, however, are sometimes targeted.
