A few weeks ago many readers wrote in asking for Italy in general due to the sub $150 fares from Newark to Milan. While I already did a post dedicated to Rome last year, I wanted to hit on the other major tourist cities in Italy as well to help those readers that will be heading to Italy soon, and for cheap! This will include Venice, Florence, Milan, Bologna, Genoa, etc. (let me know of this are any other cities you want me to cover)
This week is going to be dedicated on Milan. Here are some things I am sure readers will want suggestions on:

Last Supper tickets are difficult to obtain. Make sure you try to get them way in advance or you’ll have to resort to third party brokers….
I just got back from Milan. We stayed at the Grand Visconti Palace, which wasn’t in the center, but a 7 minute subway ride to the center. If you want a nice hotel and can’t afford to stay by Duomo, I’d consider this hotel again for sure. Good reviews on TripAdvisor. Also, we took the train to Lake Como for a day. It cost about 6 euros and was only 30 minutes from Milano Centrale. This was worth a day excursion. Doing it on your own will save you lot of money over taking a tour directly (~$100 for a day tour that is guided).
But if you like shopping at high end retailers, this is the place for you. For me, the shopping was way too expensive – I found better shopping at the flea markets and some of the stores outside of the high end shopping districts.
However, it is a pretty city and walking around for a day was great (Duomo and the surrounding area).
But I cannot speak to much in Milan because we only stayed there two full days. We spent most of our 12 days in Italy in other areas, and used Milan as our point of entry and exit.
Lake Como was a wonderful day trip from Milan. You can also take a day trip to Bologna (though we opted to stay in Bologna for 4 days and venture from there).
Finally, you could also tour Parma and Modeno as well, though (again), we chose to take those trips from Bologna.

I am taking my kids to Normandy for the 60th Reunion…….and then sending them on to Barcelona “without me”…..any advice on CHEAP CHEAP reception in Barcelona?
We extended a group tour for a day and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express by the airport and took the train into town. Nice hotel with excellent breakfast!
We took a Viator 1/2 day tour of Milan; the Last Supper was included and not to be missed! We felt so lucky, especially to see all the people without tickets being turned away. We had excellent gelato and stopped for crepes and a beer before heading back to the hotel. Tripadvisor has reivews on both places; I forget the names.

We stayed at the Westin Palace Milan using an SPG beat the timer rate (replaced by hot escapes). It was a nice hotel and it was a short walk from the train station. The Duomo is a can’t-miss attraction though, and it wasn’t too far away from the hotel and we were able to walk everywhere.
We only stayed one night as the capstone to a 12 day trip through Italy and I didn’t feel like I really needed that much more time there. I really enjoyed checking out all of the shops myself, especially getting to see the complete collection from my favorite Italian shoe brand (Santoni), while we were there.
If you like to shop, Milan is unquestionably the place to do it, and I found the shops to be more plentiful and with more complete collections than they were in Rome or Venice. That said, if you like Salvatore Ferragamo, you have to go to their store in Florence since that’s where they started.
Well, first of all there’s more in Milan than meet the eye.
If you are an art lover you should see IMHO 2 museums at least:
Museum “Poldi Pezzoli” http://www.museopoldipezzoli.it/en a private museum in Via Manzoni (Manzoni Street), not far from Piazza Duomo (Duomo Square) and the “Pinacoteca di Brera” http://www.brera.beniculturali.it/ not far either.
If you want to buy something go to Corso Buenos Aires, the longest shopping street in Europe, you won’t get sticker shock as in other parts of the city and you’ll sure find something for you or as a gift.
