Welcome to another post of helping a reader travel! Here are some travel tips and suggestions generated from reader comments on things to do in Kyoto, Japan.

A few weeks ago, a reader wrote in asking for Japan suggestions. I was able to cover an itinerary throughout Japan, but wanted to hit on many of the major tourist spots/cities within the country as well. This will include: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and any others that are requested.

Here are some things I am sure readers will want suggestions on:

  • Where to stay
  • How many days to stay

  • Recommended restaurants
  • Anything else you might think is valuable!

If you’ve ever been to Japan, specifically Osaka, let’s help out reader Jeffrey and I am sure many other interested readers! The goal of this weekly post is to help readers get a top of travel advice from the thousands of Deals We Like readers.

Visited Osaka a year or so ago. A couple of things we liked:

1. Pick a “home base” and travel to the neighboring cities. Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara are very close to each other so there’s not need to waste time checking in/checking out. You could probably get a good feel of the tri- city area in 4-5 days. More time would be better.

2. Kyoto was obviously good for temples. Fushimi Inari-taisha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fushimi_Inari-taisha) was our favorite but it can turn into a long uphill hike. Wear comfortable shoes.

3. Nara is also fun but I wouldn’t spend more than 1 day there. Feeding the deer was fun.

4. We were based at the St. Regis Osaka. Awesome service, great room, and was a great deal with cash + points (cat 5).
