For awhile now, you’ve been able to use your American Express Membership Reward points to pay for Amazon.com purchases. For every 1 point you redeem you get 1 cent off your purchase, definitely not a value I’d redeem my points at. BUT…. for a limited time, if you link your Membership Rewards account to your Amazon.com account you can get $15 off your purchase of $50 or more! There are three stipulations to this deal: 1) You must be targeted (although read the bottom of the post to see how you can get customer service to manually credit you the $15 if you were not targeted), 2) You must have an American Express credit card that earns Membership Reward points, and 3) you must spend $50 or more on items that are sold and shipped by Amazon. So if you meet requirements 1 and 2, spending $50 at Amazon.com to get $15 off is easy to do! I will take $15 FREE at Amazon.com any day! This promotion ends July 31, 2015.
How to take advantage of this promotion:
- Link your eligible American Express Card to your Amazon.com account here.
- Shop at Amazon.com and add $50 worth of products (which must be sold and shipped by Amazon.com) to your Shopping card. Many merchant gift cards work as well, so you can go ahead and search for merchant gift cards here.
- On the payment page, select your Membership Rewards earning credit card that was just linked. Select “Choose a different amount” and enter the number of points you want to use towards your purchase. Since I do not like redeeming my points at Amazon (due to the low redemption value), I entered just 1 cent which means 1 point will be applied. For the promotion to apply, the minimum amount required is only 1 point!
- On the check out page, enter the promotion code SWP07AXP15. If you were not targeted for the promotion, it will say “The promotional code you entered cannot be applied to your purchase.”
- You will see the $15 taken off on the right-hand side displaying your total amount.
If you were not targeted for this offer, you still might be able to get customer service to manually apply the $15 discount to your order. I will be trying this later today when I have a free moment and will be sure to report back. This worked well with the most recent Amazon.com / Chase Ultimate Rewards promotion. Directions on contacting customer service and getting this applied are similar to this past post (just keep in mind that the coupon code and discount is different.
For those that are eligible, enjoy your $15 free at Amazon!
You can read more about this offer in this Slickdeals alert I received first thing this morning, although I pretty much summed up all the details above!

Hey there, I really like your content normally, but it would be a little bit more honest to include the “targeted” part of this deal in the headline. It’s a pretty critical portion of the deal, wouldn’t you think? I clicked on this thinking that it’s for everybody, but one of the first things you said is that not everybody is eligible. So I felt a little bit tricked.
Anyway, thanks for your normal high quality content, and I’d just ask that you qualify some of these things in the future for us poor readers who try to get on these deals.
@Mike – Appreciate the feedback. The reason I left it out of the title, is that I actually think even if you were not targeted you are still eligible. If you go the extra step and contact customer service (I included the steps at the bottom of the post) then there is a good chance they will manually credit the order with the $15 discount. I will include this at the top of the post as well so it is more clear.
Called Amazon Cust. Service today. If you were not targeted by Amex, the code cannot be applied. She suggested I call Amex, but I think I’m in a loop here. It’s only $15, but the promo (on Amazon) is a little misleading
My sister mom and I all have an Amazon account but the only one with an MR card. I wonder if the names have to match. Will have to try it later and see
You wrote “This promotion ends July 31, 2014”. You meant 2015, correct?
@Eric – Yes I did. Thanks for letting me know, post has been updated.
Do you know if a $50 Amazon gc is excluded from this deal?
@Eric – You can always check to see if it works for your account or if customer service is willing to put it through.
Hi — I guess I wasn’t targeted but I used my AMEX card which has Membership Rewards — and it didn’t go through. So, I followed the instructions to chat with an Amazon representative and she had me complete my order, give her the order number and credited me the $15. Thanks for the tip! One question, do you think this is a one-time offer or can it be used for another purchase?
@Andrea – Great! It is intended to be a one time offer.
Didn’t work for me. Spent 1 hour with a customer service rep that did not and could not find the offer. She looked at my account and saw that I enrolled into the Points Program but was not aware of any promo code. When I gave it to her from the site she indicated that it did not work. So I cancelled my order and chalk this up to false and misleading advertising.
@Sat – Sorry to hear it did not work for you. For the next time, I recommend the “hang up and call again” method if the first customer service rep is not sure of the offer. Many people had great success, but as I mentioned in the post, this is a targeted offer and many customer service reps will do it for you manually. Not sure how this leads to false and misleading advertising.
I have found Amazon CS very fair for the most part. If they wrote in the offer that it was a targeted offer it clearly is not “false advertising”.
If you clearly read the offer there is no where in the agreement that states that it is limited to a targeted customer. Accordingly it should have been honored but was not. The offer was posted on page 2 of the checkout screen. I complied but the promo code was rejected after using points and selecting $100+ of merchandise.
Advertising is defined as the action of calling something to the attention of the public. The flagged ad on page 2 of the checkout screen seems to meet this definition.
If you clearly read my comment I wrote “If they wrote in the offer that it was a targeted offer it clearly is not “false advertising”.” Deals We Like wrote “this is a targeted offer”. I haven’t read the terms myself. There is no reason for you to be angry with me.
@Sat- It looks like maybe there are some miscommunications. Did you receive the offer directly on your Amazon account? If so, then you are absolutely eligible. Were the items you added to your cart sold and shipped by Amazon? Or by a third-party? Or did you only see the offer on a blog?
dealswelike,
Are you asking me or Sat? Sat is the one complaining, not me. I did actually receive the offer in my Amazon account but have not attempted to use it yet. I also haven’t read the terms yet.
@Eric – Sorry, that was for sat. Updated comment.
I received their offer directly on page 2 of the checkout page. I did receive a response today which reads “Hello,

You were correct that they will eventually give you the promotion offer. It’s just that you need to jump through hoops to get it. Sorry Eric if I appear to be angry at you. I was merely trying to edify you on what is meant by advertising.
I’m sorry Eric if you thought I was angry at you. I was merely trying to edify you on what is false or misleading advertising. I was one of the targeted customer since the offer came up on page 2 of the checkout. I complied with the instructions and yet was rejected when I put in the promo code. CS contacted me today with this repsonse..

Seems they will honor the promo but it just takes jumping through some hoops to attain..
.
I’m glad to see it worked out for you. This is another example of Amazon’s good CS. Do you know if Amazon gift cards are excluded from the promotion?
Worked like a charm. Thanks for posting this!
I wish I had seen this earlier. i dont know why but I assumed it had to be $1 so i used 145 points 🙁 I guess its still a good deal but hate to use more points than necessary
What?! 145 points for only $1?
