Get a 40% Bonus on Amex Transfers to British Airways

Once again, American Express is giving you a 40% bonus when transferring your Membership Reward points to British Airways. While this is not as good as the 50% bonus promo they ran this past Spring, it is still a decent bonus, especially since no there have been no other lucrative promotions for awhile from other partner airlines. This promotion will run through September 27th and there is no registration needed on your end which is nice.

a close-up of a signLast time this was offered, I stressed about how many points to transfer over, but ultimately went with 50k points, about half of my Membership Rewards balance. I did not have a specific British Airways redemption need , but still went ahead with the transfer. If you do not redeem for British Airways flights much, I probably would sway against speculative booking, but again, there aren’t too many other transfer promotions, so this might be the best you get. While redeeming for British Airways flights via London can be quite expensive (due to the hefty taxes/fees), there are some other hidden gem redemption opportunities. Personally, using your British Airways points on partner airline American Airline to fly within the US or to Canada and the Caribbean can be amazing.

If you currently are short of American Express points you can actually do a Membership Rewards point advance. The maximum number of point you can advance is 60,000.  You must earn the number of points advanced back within 12 months or you will be charged purchase points transaction rate, which can be quite expensive. To do this though, you must have been a card member for at least 6 months and your account must be in good standing. This is a good option if you are looking to apply, or just recently applied, for an American Express Membership Rewards card, but wont have new applicant bonus points post to your account by September 27th. You can learn more about the American Express cards and their respective bonus on the Promotions page of this site.

Note that you can only advance 60k points if you have a Platinum AMEX. It’s 15k for Gold and 5k for Green. If you have multiple cards, the highest one takes precedence, but you can’t advance multiple. Also you can get your pending points posted when you call in to do the transfer (not when doing it online).
