Register for Small Business Saturday this Sunday – FREE $25 with Registered American Express

This post may contain affiliate links from our advertising partners. Read my Advertiser Disclosure policy here. Additionally, some of the offers on this page may no longer be available through Deals We Like.

During small business Saturday (Saturday November 24th) you can get a $25 statement credit when using a registered American Express credit card at participating small businesses in your local community (must spend $25+ with this Amex card). You can only receive one credit per American Express card, but there is no limit to the number of cards you can register. If you have multiple Amex cards and have an expensive purchase, have the local business split the charges amongst the various cards you have!

To be eligible, you must  first register for this promotion. This registration opens tomorrow and enrollment is limited. I highly suggest getting your American Express cards together and enrolling this SUNDAY at 2:00am EST. Do not forget as this is free money!

To find out participating Small Businesses in your area, go to the Small Business Saturday, website and on the bottom of the page type in your location/zip code. You will see 20 pages of the closest participating small businesses close to that location. If you are in a popular area, try entering the town/zip code nearby to see additional participating merchants. This is a great way to support your local businesses while also getting something for free – a win-win situation!

And just a side note… unfortunately, corporate cards and prepaid cards are not eligible but all other American Express cards can be registered – another great advantage of an American Express points/miles earning credit card. This includes (just to list a few), Starwood American Express, Hilton American Express, Costco American Express, Bloomingdales American Express, Macy’s American Express, American Express Gold Rewards Card, American Express Platinum Card, Citi AAdvantage American Express, etc. The business versions of these cards also qualify. If you have added authorized users, those cards are also eligible and are separate from the primary card. This, however, does not work for secondary cards that have the same account number and is typical for the Citi American Express cards.

Between Mr. Deals and I, we will be enjoying $150 of free money! I haven’t yet figured out definitely where I will be “shopping” on Small Business Saturday, but most likely a local restaurant. If you have no use for that amount of free money on that one day, you can also purchase gift cards in store for $25.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Limit one (1) $25 statement credit per American Express card. To be eligible, Cardmembers must enroll an eligible American Express Card in this offer at ShopSmall.com. Prepaid and Corporate Cards are not eligible.
  • The number of enrollments is limited. Enrollment opens at 12:00AM MST (“Mountain Standard Time”) on November 18, 2012, and will continue until 11:59PM MST on November 24, 2012 unless the enrollment limit is reached sooner.
  • To receive the $25 statement credit, the Cardmember must use his or her enrolled Card to spend $25 or more in a single, in-store transaction at a qualifying small business location on Saturday, November 24, 2012. To receive the credit, the transaction must equal $25 or more (for example, if your transaction is only for $15, you will not receive a credit). Multiple transactions of less than $25 will not qualify even if the combined total of those transactions is over $25. You may purchase multiple items that together equal $25 or more, but you must purchase them in a single transaction to receive the statement credit.
  • Qualifying small business locations are those identified on the Shop Small® Map, available at ShopSmall.com. In addition, small business locations that accept American Express through Square also qualify and can be found on the Square Directory at https://squareup.com/directory/?cmpId=amex or from your mobile phone using the Square Wallet app. Small business locations that do not appear on the Shop Small® Map or that do not accept American Express through Square will not qualify for the $25 statement credit offer. Please note that business location information provided on the Shop Small® Map and Square Directory may contain inaccuracies or errors, including as a result of information provided by third parties. Transactions with political campaigns or political action committees are not eligible, regardless of whether they appear on the Shop Small® Map or in the Square Directory.
  • If American Express does not receive information that identifies a transaction as having occurred in-store at a qualifying small business location, the transaction will not qualify for the statement credit. For example, the following transactions will not be eligible for the credit: transactions made using an electronic wallet or any other transaction made through a third party; and transactions not made directly with the merchant.
  • Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 8 weeks after American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase. Note that American Express may not receive information about your qualifying purchase from the merchant until all of the items from your qualifying purchase have been provided or shipped by the merchant.
  • The Card Registration Terms and Conditions will also apply at enrollment.

Last year you could visit businesses that were not on the list and still get the credit. Do you think they will enforce that this year?

Do the purchases have to be made in person at the store or will making them through their WEB site count? (or over the phone)?

And is there a way for AMEX to tell how the purchase was made to begin with?

AMEX says this on their T&C’s…
To receive the $25 statement credit, the Cardmember must use his or her enrolled Card to spend $25 or more in a single, in-store transaction at a qualifying small business location on Saturday

@patrick – Last year some were able to report that over the phone purchases work and some online. There is no guarantee though.

Do you know if the Macy’s AMEX cards work? I seem to recall I used mine last year and didn’t get the credit.

@Rick – Macy’s AMEX should work. I’ve used mine in the past.

By the way, one of the cards I used last year for this promotion was a Citi AMEX and American Express could not give me the statement credit even though I received a confirmation that my card was registered and that I completed the needed purchase. They said that they didn’t have access to my card since it was managed by Citi. Citi on the other hand said it was a promotion managed by American Express.

@rilys – This is the problem with Citi AMEX cards. Neither take responsibility, so if you do not get the statement credit you are out of luck. Technically it should work, but you are taking your chances. This is the case with all of the Amex syncing promotions as well.

@Lucy – There are a lot in my area too that don’t make sense as well. I think the problem is is that it is limited to 20 pages (so 100 merchants) and if you live in a urban area you can’t see everything. Try putting in another zip code or the town next door.

@Sil – If it is an Amex technically yes, however, similar to the Citi cards, if you don’t get the statement credit neither Bank of America or AMEX are going to be able to manually post it and will put the blame on the other.

We have a magazine subscription business that counts as an Amex small business (do a search for Discount Magazine in zip code 33913).
For all the people who want to get the easy $25 bonus, we will work with you to split the orders, give additional discounts, basically whatever it takes to get you that free $25. (We’ve been in business over 30 years also!)
Magazines are a great christmas gift, so knock out 2 birds with one stone!
We also match competitors prices, so you are guaranteed to get the best price.
Call 800-999-5050 M-F 930-5pm EST. Ask for Marc.

So if I add my wife as an additional user to my card, she could use her card to also get the $25 credit, even though it is the same credit card account number?

Reply to  Robert

@Robert – Last year people reported success with this. As long as it is a different credit card number, which is NOT the case with the Citi Amex cards (so AAdvantage Amex for example)

Suzy

@Robert – usually on Amex cards the additional user card holder has a different account number (the last 3 numbers are usually different). If your wife is an additional user to your account and her account number is different then yes, you can add that card. If the numbers are exactly the same, then you cannot.
(as quoted by dealwelike in the original post above: If you have added authorized users, those cards are also eligible and are separate from the primary card. This, however, does not work for secondary cards that have the same account number and is typical for the Citi American Express cards.)

OK, so today I get this Shop Small gift card in the mail from Fed Ex. It says: use this card on Nov. 24th at a small business that takes American Express. It looks exactly like a gift card from Amex, except it has “Shop Small” logo (white card with blue ink)… Anyway, thought it was cool, anyone else get one? It says I can use it anywhere they Amex (small business, of course)…

Just read this on the shop small site FAQ: Question: Can I register multiple cards?
Answer: Card members can register more than one Card as long as each is linked to a separate account.

This makes me think that an additional cardholder on the same account with a different account number is not eligible since both are linked to the same account.

@Suzy – People last year were able to register additional cardholders as long as they were Amex cards, not Citi/Amex cards.

Yeah, i really wish we could get this clarified. I just registered ALL my cards and AU cards, and they all came back with a Thank You for registering letter. Last year apparently this was allowed. However, I get the feeling they are trying to be vague on it.

I won’t like it if I buy stuff and not getting a credit on the AU cards.

@farsighted – I am not sure about the AU cards, I don’t see why not, but we will see if we can find any success stories from last year.

I’d be careful on the 24th regarding online purchases as some transactions of this type don’t post immediately or for even 24 hours, and the terms of this promo clearly require charges on your Amex be on Nov.24th.

christine P you probably can both at one store, but honestly, if you only have two, why not spread the joy?

dealswelike: my husband got a Shop Small GC too; I figured out it was for a facebook contest I entered us both in. They are just regular Amex GC (courtesy of Fed EX, thank you guys!). They don’t expire. Cool!

I love those contests. I had forgotten about it completely.
