Back in January, Marriott communicated with us that existing card members of the newly named Marriott Bonvoy American Express card (formerly known as the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card), will be eligible to earn up to a 100,000 bonus throughout 2019. The Deal: For every $25,000 you spend on the card, you’ll earn 25,000 bonus points, up to four times during the calendar year.
- Spend $25,000, earn 25,000 total bonus points
- Spend $50,000, earn 50,000 total bonus points
- Spend $75,000, earn 75,000 total bonus points
- Spend $100,000, earn 100,000 total bonus points
This promotion runs February 24 through December 31, 2019, although only spend after you register will count towards this promotion and you must register by April 9, 2019. Update: The registration date has changed to May 31st.Â
Of course this is a great bonus for those who already put a ton of spend on the card, although you might not want to shift your spend to this card solely for this bonus. With this card, you typically earn 2x points per dollar spent (on non category bonuses), so once you hit the $25k threshold bonuses you are earning an extra point per dollar, essentially putting you at the 3x points per dollar spent mark. If you are still in the SPG mentality, this is equivalent to earning 1x SPG point per dollar spent — the exact same amount you used to always earn on your every day purchases prior to the card moving over to the Marriott portfolio. Ultimately, if you are able to earn the bonus, this is putting you at the same earning rate as you used to. Of course this is the best credit card opportunity to earn Marriott points, but if you are open to earning points and miles in other programs, you might find that other cards still work better for you.
Overall…
The Marriott credit cards are definitely not the highest earning cards you’ll find if you are looking to maximize the points earned for everyday purchases, but they do allow you to increase your Marriott account balance to stay at some top tier Marriott and Starwood properties. Earning 100,000 points is also pretty good and in my opinion probably the highest offers you’ll see (at least publicly available).
