A few weeks ago US Airways announced that their loyalty program will finally merge with American Airlines AAdvantage program next month (exact time is TBD, but at some point within the first two weeks of April). With this merger, there are some things to know to ensure you do not miss out on anything!
- Link your accounts by March 20, 2015 for a smooth transition. You can do that here.
- Although the date is still TBD, you have only a few more weeks to book flights with your US Airways miles. If you are looking to redeem those miles, do that now! US Airways miles require you to redeem for a roundtrip flight, although do allow a free stopover.
- If you have US Airways Chairman Preferred status and have systemwide upgrade certificates that still have not been used, you will need to redeem them prior to the programs merging. While they can be used for a future date, they must be redeemed within the next few weeks (exact date is still TBD).
- Apply for the US Airways credit card before it is obsolete! This is valuable for those trying to increase their American Airlines account. You can read more about this here.
Hopefully there will be an exact date for the final loyalty merger and I will be sure to share that with you all once I find out for sure. Just make sure to link your account, redeem your miles (if it makes sense), use your systemwide upgrades, and apply for the US Airways credit card if it was on your radar!

The US Air award bookings already aren’t working but about at 50% and not much if at all into 2016 dates.
I kept getting an error trying to combine my accounts but finally figured it out and got it working
I realize this question has little to do with this particular post – but can you transfer American Airline miles to other places? I recall using AA miles towards my Hilton account. I’ve checked online and can’t really find anything on their web site to tell me whether you can transfer miles out. I

@Karen H – Unfortunately you cannot. You can transfer Hilton to American though (but not at a good transfer rate).
I dont see any benifits combining the program especially when I have an AA card with 10k miles rebate and US airway card with 10% rebate on miles redemption starting second quarter, isnt it better to to keep it separately for most mile ?
@rick – Although you are combining the programs, you still have the perks of the two separate cards for the time being. Eventually though the US Airways credit card will transition over to an American Airlines Barclaycard.
