At I posted back in January, Amtrak is running a targeted promotion where you can get anywhere between a 10%-50% bonus on purchased points. This promotion ends tomorrow, Saturday March 15. You can go to this site to purchase the points and see if your account was targeted for the promotion.
This is a promotion that they run a few times a year and can definitely provide you with some great savings when taking an Amtrak train ride. For example, I typically take Amtrak between New York and Boston where a one way train ticket is 4,000 points. The cheapest train will cost $49, but to get this price you must reserve decently far in advance or travel on extremely off-peak times. More last minute train rides or peak times will cost $100+ for just a one-way trip.
I was personally targeted for the 30% promotion which means I can purchase the maximum amount of 10,000 points for $275. This will ultimately give me 13,000 points which is good for 3 one-way Amtrak tickets in the Northeast. This means that each one-way ticket will cost $91.
Some things to know with Amtrak travel:
- The terms with purchasing points state that they can take up to 72 hours to post, however, in my experience they post immediately
- You can only purchase up to 10,000 points in a calendar year
- You can redeem your points for another passenger (this means if you’ve already hit the 10,000 point amount for purchases, use a friend/family members account)
Enjoy!
