I was rummiging through the Amtrak site yesterday and noticed a pretty decent sale. For tickets purchased by April 14 for travel April 11-May 22, you will get 42% off your companion ticket. I played around with some days for fun and found some interesting things with this promotion though:
- If an odd number of people are on the reservation than the discount wont apply at check out – so if there are three people you are looking to make a reservation for, book two separate itineraries, one for two passengers and one for one passenger. If there are two or four people on the reservation than the discount will apply.
- The discount applies to regular fare priced ticket – so if you are able to find a $49 fare from Boston-NYC, for example, the discounted price will actually show more. For those low fares, you are better off without the discount. This is the same concept that applies to AAA discounts when booking Amtrak travel.
- The promotion is not valid on Acela Express, Piedmont, Carolinian, Missouri River Runner and the 7000 – 8999 Thruways.
You must book through this site and upon selecting your time of travel (and fare) the discount will appear on the following screen. If there are two of you, this is a bigger discount than any other of the discount codes, AAA, AARP, Student Advantage, etc. The T&C also state that advance reservations of 7 days are required to be eligible for the promotion.
