For those that are about to lose their Marriott status (Silver, Gold, or Platinum), Marriott is offering the opportunity to “buy back” status. This means, instead of losing status February 29, 2016, you’ll be able to keep it until February 28, 2017.
You have until April 1, 2016, to make this decision and it will cost the following number of points:
- Platinum status – 40,000 points
- Gold status – 25,000 points
- Silver status – 7,500 points
Unfortunately, you are only allowed to buy back your status for the exact same status you are losing. So if you are currently Gold, you cannot buy status for Platinum and vice versa. To buy back status you can call 800-321-7396.
Buying back status is really a personal preference. I personally do not see much value in Silver status, so I would probably never buy back Silver status. Gold and Platinum really depend on if you are planning on staying at many worthwhile Marriott hotels this year. If you typically only stay at lower end Marriott’s (i.e., Fairfield Inns, Courtyard, etc.) I do not see the value at all as there really are no benefits upon check-in. The value really comes (in my opinion) when you can get free breakfast and club lounge access. I am personally losing my Platinum status and am not going to take advantage of this offer. I just do not foresee myself traveling enough this year at Marriott hotels where having status is worth it.
Will you be buying back your status?
