UPDATE: This offer has expired.

As I wrote about yesterday, Delta just increased the welcome bonus for four of their co-branded American Express credit cards, this includes: Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American ExpressPlatinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American ExpressGold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Expressand Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American ExpressThese four cards are in addition to the newly announced product at the beginning of September, the Blue Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express.

That means there are a total of five co-branded American Express Delta credit cards. And since all are different products from one another, you are eligible for the bonus for all five cards (as long as you are approved and meet the respective minimum spend per card). So if you are really looking to increase your Delta balance or have a desired trip where you’d like to redeem Delta miles, right now is a great opportunity to apply for the cards – especially since all cards are currently at the highest bonus offer ever.

There is one huge caveat though – American Express only allows you to have 5 credit cards open at a given time. All five of these Delta cards are “credit cards” and not “charge cards”. You are actually allowed a total of 10 Amex cards – 5 credit cards and 5 charge cards. So the only way to be able to be approved for these 5 Delta cards is if you currently do not have any open American Express credit cards or if you are planning on closing any prior to applying for one of the Delta cards. Cards that do not count against the credit card limit of 5 include: American Express Mercedes-Benz Platinum, Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express, The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN, The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN, and The Platinum Card® from American Express – these are all charge cards. You can learn more about the maximum number of American Express credit cards you can have as well as which ones count as a credit card vs. charge card here.

As you can see from above, the two Gold cards will give you up to 60,000 bonus points after meeting the minimum spend requirement, the two Platinum cards will give you 70,000 bonus points after meeting the minimum spend requirement, and the Blue card will give you 10,000 bonus points after meeting the minimum spend requirement. This will give you a total of 270,000 bonus Delta miles just from credit card bonuses! Of course, the chances of someone applying for all five of these cards now is probably slim, but the option is there, and this is a reminder that you can still earn the welcome bonus on more then 1! Remember, the two Gold cards have a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year (then $95 every year thereafter) and the Blue card has no annual fee!

I may be relying on old data but I thought a contest with a first prize of
270,000 SkyMiles would have a second praise of 540,000 SkyMiles.
