I posted last month about the platinum challenge that Starwood has in place giving platinum status after 15 paid nights within a 90 day period. Also, this challenge is only for current non-platinum guests. In my opinion, this was an easy way to earn platinum status. However, maybe too easy because starting November 1, the rules will be changing.
It has been reported that in one week the new rules will include:
- 18 paid nights (no longer 15 nights)
- 3 month time frame beginning on the first day of the month enrolled (no longer any 90 day time period)
With my original post I received some happy and not so happy comments/emails. Some were thrilled that they would be able to earn status with this challenge, while others were pretty pissed that the number of platinum members would increase.
While any negative change is never appreciated, I am happy to see Starwood giving folks notice. This gives you the opportunity to still enroll in the current challenge requirements within the next 5 days. If you are interested in the current challenge, I would recommend calling by October 30, 2011. With the current terms, if you do not meet he challenge requirements, you can re-enroll as many times as needed. Once November 1st hits, I am not sure if those terms will still be in effect. I guess we better wait and see.
I enrolled in this challenge about 2 weeks ago as I planned it accordingly with my upcoming trip to Thailand. However, due to this challenge I am paying for some nights that I would have otherwise used points for – luckily Thailand is still relatively cheap!
