UPDATE: This offer has expired.
The Chase Freedom credit card comes with rotating quarterly bonus categories where you can earn 5x points on your purchase (up to $1,500 per quarter) instead of the regular 1x point per dollar spent.
Since 2013 is coming to an end, Chase just announced the 2014 Q1 rotating categories for this card. These bonus categories will include:
- Gas stations
- Department stores
- Starbucks
Great categories, as you can easily max out the $1,500 spend on gas stations alone. Of course, this will be harder to do for those that live in a city where they do not own a car, but you can purchase a gift card for your favorite department store and then use those gift cards throughout the year.
There is no indication yet whet the rest of the bonus categories will be for the remainder of the year, but here are the current 2013 bonus spend categories so you can get an idea of possibilities:
- January-March: Gas Stations, Drugstores, Starbucks
- April-June: Restaurants, Movie theaters, Lowes
- July-September: Gas stations, Theme Parks, Kohl’s
- October-December: Amazon.com, Select department stores
Remember, you must always activate your 5x point bonus every quarter.

I am hopeful that Chase will reinstate Drug Stores on the list! Gas stations is a rough one for me since I can no longer find VR at local gas stations.
And I’m going to be maxed out on department stores after the Q4 Christmas haul!
