Last week Wyndham Hotels & Resorts finalized its purchase of the La Quinta hotel chain. And today marks the first day of the two programs being integrated – you can now transfer your points freely between the two programs and match your status. They are hoping to have the two programs fully integrated by the second quarter of 2019.
Transfer Points at a 1:1 Ratio
You can now transfer your points between the two programs at a 1:1 ratio. With Wyndham Rewards every single property costs a flat 15,000 points (hotels that have multiple bedrooms cost more). With your La Quinta points, properties cost between 6,000 points and 24,000 points. So if you have Wyndham points and are looking to stay at an inexpensive lower level property, you are probably better off transferring to La Quinta and staying at a La Quinta property as it might require less points. If you have La Quinta points and are looking to stay at an expensive points property, then transfer to Wyndham and stay at a Wyndham property for most likely less points. Just compare similar properties in your destination to see which one will require less points. This only works if you are looking to stay in a destination with both Wyndham and La Quinta properties – there are not nearly as many La Quinta properties as there are Wyndham properties.
Status Match
You can now status match between the two programs:
If you have Wyndham status…
- Wyndham Rewards Gold = La Quinta Returns Gold
- Wyndham Rewards Platinum = La Quinta Returns Elite
- Wyndham Rewards Diamond = La Quinta Returns Elite
Earning La Quinta status won’t get you much, but if you have plans to stay at one of their properties, it is worth having the status. Gold status will get you 2 complimentary upgrades a year and Elite status will get you an unlimited number of upgrades (assuming availability) and more availability for free night awards.
If you have La Quinta status…
- La Quinta Returns Gold = Wyndham Rewards Gold
- La Quinta Returns Military Rewards Gold = Wyndham Rewards Gold
- La Quinta Returns Elite = Wyndham Rewards Platinum
- La Quinta Military Rewards Elite = Wyndham Rewards Platinum
Unfortunately, there is no way to earn Wyndham Rewards Diamond with the status match, and quite honestly that is the only status that will really do you much good.
If you’ve been accruing points in either of these two programs this now will open up some more opportunities for redeeming your points.
