Thank you for this very informative post! You saved me 50 dollars for a rental this weekend.
Great info! I’m looking to rent for five days in LIH on nov 28? Any advice on a great rate? Right now the best I see is $300ai
Right now with Hertz I am getting about $20 less using my states AAA CPD# and Save $40 on a weekly rental at airport locations by including PC#179841 in your reservation. I am at $78 and your listed “Use AAA discount code (CPD code: 1805452) to receive an additional 10% off, bringing the rental rate down to $13.49/day” puts me at $118.
LIH and all Hawaiian islands are always ridiculously expensive. I found using American Airlines miles was the best deal. 5 days rental for me last Nov was 10,000 miles. Maybe more if you don’t have minimum AA status, but check it out.

Thanks for compiling these. I used the Hertz code in Tampa last month, and ended up spending less than $50 for a weekend rental. I hope these discounts will come back in the fall.
Total newbie question: I don’t want to EARN points with a car rental, I want to RENT a car using points… Is there a primer or tips-guide anywhere you know of? (Yes, I understand, not the best use of miles — but ‘needs must.’)
@Elenor – I’ll put together a post for you. As you said, not a good usage of points at all, but what points do you have that you are looking to use? Also try carrental8.com to see if you can get a cheap rental.
Thanks! I’ve got 57k UR points; around 8k Delta pesos (as I’ve read they get called). I’ve currently reserved cars through Costco at very (very!) good prices; but would like to use up some of those UR points (saving the $$ is nearly more important than using the points “wisely”). But the car rentals I’m seeing through the UR Mall are all around 9k to 13K (and I have three car rentals: 11-14 June at LAX; 14-15 June at STS (my friends’ wedding up the coast); and then LAX again 15 through 18 June. (Right now: Avis just under $100, Alamo just under $100, and Budget just over $70.)
Figuring to use my Ink Bold — I have that new AMEX rental-car insurance thing — but do not want to pay ~$75 across the 3 rentals! (I thought of renting a car at LAX for the whole week, and just parking it at LAX while I flew up to Sonoma — but I worry about it being damaged or stolen at LAX; and it seems a bit silly to have two rental cars on the same day!)
And I have no data on which to plan this thing — very little familiarity with renting cars. My late husband would just rent from Hertz for $$ and we’d go. I need to be more careful (and cheap!)
So, any advice you can give would be welcome!
Great post! I found the discount codes with Avis are giving me the best
price usually. I used about half a dozen and it’s normally 50% (often
80%). I never had trouble with the rentals and had some spectacular
Mercedes upgrades in Europe.
