UPDATE: THIS OFFER HAS EXPIRED
A few weeks back Delta released a unique limited time offer. Instead of just offering increased bonus miles as they’ve done in the past, they instead introduced a miles + statement credit opportunity. While this is by no means the best offer we’ve seen for the everyday person, it is an excellent offer for those who are planning on booking a decent amount of (paid) Delta travel within the next there months. This is a reminder though, that this particular offer expires TODAY, August 15, 2019.Â
- Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express: Earn 30,000 Bonus Miles after you use your new Card to make $1,000 in purchases within your first 3 months. Plus, receive 50% back in the form of statement credits on purchases made directly with Delta with your Card within the first 3 months, up to $300 back. Terms Apply.
- Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express: Earn 50,000 Bonus Miles after you spend $3,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months. Plus, receive 50% back in the form of statement credits on purchases made directly with Delta with your Card within the first 3 months, up to $500 back. Terms Apply.
The Offer…
As I mentioned above, this is definitely a very different type of offer than we’ve seen in the past. With the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express you’ll receive 30k miles + up to $300 back, while the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express will give you 50k miles + up to $500 back.
If you value your Delta miles around 1.5 cents per mile, that means 30k miles are worth $450 and 50k miles are worth $750. Then, if you have upcoming flights you are looking to book over the next 3 months (paid flights) and are able to maximize the statement credits, this can yield you another $300 and $500 respectively. That puts the Gold Delta card offer value at around $750 and the Platinum Delta card offer around $1,250. Just a few months ago, Delta was offering up to 80k miles with the Platinum card, so with the same valuation that was worth about $1,200. A slightly less offer, but it comes down to how you value your points and whether or not you are actually paying for Delta travel over the next few months.
Remember, the 1.5 cents per mile is an average, where some will get closer to 1 cent per mile, while others will be able to stretch their miles to over 2 cents per mile. I personally redeemed 32,000 miles per person for my family last year to fly non-stop Boston to Lisbon, which would have otherwise cost me around $600 per person. Although Delta miles have devalued over the years, there are many Delta mileage sales and if you pay close attention, you can absolutely get an incredible deal.
Overall…
For those of you who prefer cash in hand and have a decent amount of paid travel you are looking to book over the next few months, this is a great offer. For those who prefer the miles, I’d hold out until a better offer comes around.
And remember, American Express has a once in a lifetime policy (at least for these public offers), so if you’ve received the welcome offer for the exact same card in the past, unfortunately you will not be eligible again. With that being said, each card is a separate product, so if you’ve received the offer for the Gold card in the past, for example, you are still eligible for the Platinum. This also means you want to apply during the best offer available that works with your travel planning.

You can only have one bite of the apple with Delta. American Express will only honor first time applicants for their bonus miles offer.
