Delta already has a bad rep for being the worst mileage redemption program available, and unfortunately their “Sky Pesos” are being devalued, once again! Last week, Delta announced that a new award chart will be put in place starting February 1, 2014. And unfortunately this is just a temporary award chart before their massive devaluation that will take place June 1, 2014.
There are currently three award charts available on Delta’s website:
- Chart 1: For travel prior to February 1, 2014
- Chart 2: For travel between February 1, 2014 and May 31, 2014
- Chart 3: For travel on or after June 1, 2014
Unfortunately there was NO notice of this as the number of miles required depends on your date of travel, NOT when you made the reservation. Typically, when hotels and airlines change their award chart we are given some notice to hurry and make those reservations. With Delta though, no courtesy was given at all.
For those that only use your miles for domestic economy class tickets, do not worry – there are NO changes to the award chart for those flights. Many of the awards going to Hawaii, Africa, Middle East, South Asia, North Asia, and Africa are changing. Additionally, domestic business class is changing. These changes range anywhere from 5,000 miles to 20,000 miles roundtrip. Changes also range between the three award options: Saver, Standard, and Peak.
While Europe wasn’t hit for the February 1, 2014 devaluation, they will increase in miles needed started June 1, 2014.
I am glad I’ve never really been a Delta flyer. Luckily most of my miles are cooped up in American Airlines and no word on a devaluation there. Although, I am sure it is just a matter of time.

@greg – this was supposed to be posted awhile ago. Not quite sure what happened there. But you are correct, this isn’t hot off the press news for many.
we dumped most of our delta miles for a trip to s.e. asian business class 2 months ago, and not planing on getting more delta miles.
same for United next year.
I almost had a heart attack thinking there was a 3rd devaluation in 6 months.
[…] yes! While other airlines are devaluing their miles and cutting perks for their customers, JetBlue continues to give the people what they […]
I’m squirreling away my miles in United and American. I usually fly Delta quite a bit but they are certainly doing everything they can to scare away their elite customers. American is looking better these days. Plus they have much better redemption rates.
