Is Earning Points with Drop Worth it?

I think so! You’ve probably seen many blogs writing about a relatively new app called Drop. But in case you haven’t, it is an app where you link your credit/debit card and then earn points at many popular merchants for every dollar spent with that linked card. While in theory, it is a great concept for those looking to earn points (to cash in on gift cards), but MANY accounts have been shut down. When it was initially launched, there were very little restrictions, so folks were using it big time for manufacture spend – purchasing gift cards in bulk, etc. and were earning $500+ worth of Drop points.

While I’ve been using Drop spastically here and there, it seems as though I am one of the few who has not had my account disabled (from the other blogs I’ve read). That could also be that my purchases have been minimal, no taking advantage, no M/S spend. So yes, many folks are beyond annoyed with the app, but if you use it as it was intended to be used, you should not have a problem.

With Drop, you’ll earn a certain number of point for every dollar spent at many merchants that you probably shop at often. Some include: Amazon, Costco, Nordstrom, Uber, Starbucks, Best Buy, Safeway, Walmart, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Lyft, Gap, Dunkin’ Donuts, instacart, etc. The number of points depend on the retailer, with some offering more then others. For example, Amazon purchases offer 20 points per dollar spent, while Walmart offers 10 points for dollar spent. There are also many one-time offers where you’ll earn a nice bonus for your purchase. Currently, Amazon is offering 2,000 bonus points for a $20+ purchase and Boxed.com is offering 20,000 bonus points for a $50+ purchase (which works nicely with the current Amex Offer! I’ll dedicate another post on maximizing the Boxed Amex Offer + Drop Offer). Once you earn a minimum of 5,000 points you can then redeem those points for a gift card (every 1,000 points = $1).

While you won’t become rich off of Drop, it is an easy way to earn free gift cards for your everyday spending without really having to think about it. For example, a $200 purchase on Amazon will net you 4,000 Drop points. While that will only earn you $4 towards a gift card redemption, it is still better then nothing! It takes a few minutes to set up an account and link your credit cards, but once that is done, there are no additional steps you need to take to earn the points.

If you are new to Drop, you’ll also earn a 1,000 point bonus (worth $1). While there is a “waitlist” to gain access, it’ll probably just take a few days for you to receive an email allowing you to fully register.
