Get 24% off at Upscale Chain Restaurants

This morning I posted about Boston’s restaurant week and how you can get a $5 Amex statement credit with a $21+ purchase. The great thing about this particular Amex Sync promotion is that you can get this $5 statement credit an unlimited number of times, it is not a one time offer like many other Amex Sync promotions.

So for those in the Boston area, go crazy with purchasing $21 gift certificates at your favorite restaurant. This will allow you to dine out at those restaurants for 24% off until your gift certificates run out. The key though is to make sure the restaurant issues you the gift certificate from their restaurant and doesn’t run it through a third-party vendor. I of course do not have first hand experience with every participating restaurant, but if the restaurant is able to run the transaction from their store you are all set. You are able to view all the participating restaurants here.

While those local to Boston really make out the best, there are some participating restaurants that also have a presence outside of Boston. So in theory, you can purchase a gift certificate from the local chain in Boston and then use the certificate at another location. As mentioned above though, you need to ensure that the restaurant can process the gift card for you locally through their store. If they direct you to a corporate number or online, most likely you will not see the statement credit. The transaction needs to come from the participating location, not another location within the chain.

Keep in mind that I have not actually tried out this tactic for the chain restaurants. But if you were able to purchase a gift card and receive the $5 statement credit please comment below with your success to help out other readers. I suggest calling the restaurant directly and see if they will process the gift card for you and send it to you. Or, if you happen to be traveling to Boston between now and March 28 you can always go into the restaurant and see.

The participating restaurants with a presence outside of Boston include:

  • 5 Napkin Burger
  • The Capital Grill
  • Del Frisco’s
  • Fleming’s
  • Haru
  • Joe’s American Bar and Grill
  • Legal Seafood
  • Max Brenner
  • McCormick & Schmick’s
  • Melting Pot
  • Morton’s
  • Ruth’s Chris Steak House
  • Smith and Wollensky

An example: If you enjoy dinning out at Legal Seafood often, in theory you purchase $525 worth of Legal Seafood gift cards and get $125 back in statement credits (essentially giving you 24% off). Remember though, you must purchase in increments of $21. So this $525 in gift card will have to be done across 25 transactions. However, if the restaurants requires you to purchase gift cards with a $25 denomination, you will need to make 21 transactions and will receive $105 back in statement credits (making the discount only 20% off).

Please comment below with your success  and I’ll be sure to update this post with what has worked/has not worked.

posting 24% off in your title heightens expectations for disappointment when one reads that it’s only $5 Amex statement credit with a $21+ purchase. why not post the title as it was intended. it’s like saying 24% off the purchase of a car only to find out its $5 Amex statement credit with a $21+ purchase at a car dealership of your choice

@Al – Because this is not a one time statement credit. In theory you can purchase $1,000 worth of restaurant gift cards and get 24% back for those gift card purchases.

@Al – No problem! I’ll keep it just in case other readers thought the same.

Hmm. Not much value here. Only two on that list have a presence in my region. Both are already so badly overpriced that I avoid them like the plague.
