A few weeks ago Mr. Deals and I went to Vegas for a total of 5 days. This was our first trip away from Baby Deals, but as the saying goes “What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas”, so I guess I won’t be able to tell you much about our crazy party trip! Just kidding. What do you think two 30 year olds without their baby did in Vegas? Slept on the plane, slept through the night, slept in, and slept at the pool! It was amazing and much much better than any crazy Vegas party others might partake in! I’ve done the Vegas thing many times in the past and must admit, I enjoyed the relaxation component much better!

While I would not chose Vegas as a vacation destination, I was already heading there to go to the BoardingArea conference (the blog network that hosts Deals We Like) and figured I’d bring Mr. Deals along for the trip. We decided to take on an extra two days which I thought was the perfect amount of time to tack on.

The first two nights we stayed at the Mandalay Bay which is a very nice resort hotel in Vegas. It is less then 2 miles to the airport, but of course the taxi ride was close to $30! One thing to note – taxis in Vegas are the biggest rip off ever! There is a $9/person shuttle though, but they said it would take double the time. Since there were two of us, we spent the few extra dollars for the most direct route.

The next two days were spent at the BoardingArea conference, although Mr. Deals did spend some time at the Mandalay Bay pool. I’ll blog more on the Mandalay Bay and the pool area in a separate post, but overall it was great.

After the conference we headed over to The Palazzo which is on the entire opposite side of the strip. I used TravelPony to get a pretty decent rate at the hotel (related post). We spent these two days enjoying our baby free time. This included a good amount of time at the pool, some time at the casino and ultimately winning $150 (I turned out to be pretty good at Blackjack!), wandering around the hotel, walked down the strip, hiking Red Rock Canyon, and eating at some really good restaurants. The next few posts will talk more about these activities!

And sleeping in was amazing!

If you paid $30 for your cab from the airport to Mandalay without giving the driver permission to use the highway, you were likely illegally long hauled. It should have been about $15.

If that happens again, you can turn that $30 into a free ride by threatening to call the taxicab authority. You can also prevent it in the first place by specifying your route (via Tropicana in your case).

For a town that lives on tourist money, they sure don’t do much to stop cab drivers from ripping people off.
