It is now 2012 in Thailand! Although there are still 12+ hours left in the United States, Happy New Year everyone!
I just got back from a massive party in the street of Chiang Mai and it is extremely different than anything I’ve seen back in the States. There are massive fireworks, a band playing outside, and people launching their own good luck balloons (similar to the ones that were in the Bachelorette last season). There are literally thousands of these good luck balloons in the sky – it is really cool! The hotel I am staying at (Hotel M) is in the best location for New Years as it is right outside of the Old City walls. I am glad that we opted not to stay at the Le Meridien this evening as they had a required dinner and is located further away from the major street party. Tomorrow we are back at the Le Meridien, which is great as we’ll be right next to the Sunday night market.
Well I am making this short as I am waking up early for a full day at an elephant park. This is where you own your own elephant for the day. I am really looking forward to this as I heard it is an amazing experience. Much more details to come on this amazing trip in Thailand – not to worry!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

headed there in february- more info and photos please!!
@Steve – Not to worry, many detailed posts with photos to come!
We just got back from Chiang Mai and had a great time too!
one item to note: the regular night market is right outside Le Meridian most every night, but the Sunday Walking market is in the walls of the old city along Rachadamnoen Rd and the Tae Phae gate. Good luck-
@Eric – great to know, thanks!
The massages at the women’s prison are very good and very cheap. Also serves a good cause. Have fun at Patara. My wife and I had a blast there! Definitely the highlight of our trip to Thailand.
Happy New Year!
@Rudresh – Went to Patara yesterday and absolutely LOVED it. Highlight of my trip thus far as well. Happy New Year to you too!
Are you going to Elephant Nature Park? It’s an amazing place.
If you like interesting celebrations, you should go to Thailand during Songkran-the Thai New Year.
@Michael – I went to the Patara Elephant Farm which was amazing!!!
I hope you didn’t ride the elephants… At Elephant Nature Park we got to feed & bathe the elephants in a river. Learned about how they are trained (pretty cruel) and other interesting thing about them.
@Michael – We learned all about that as well. It was a great day.
