I was in the midst of a series covering different cities in Germany, but I received an email from reader Jeremy about an upcoming trip to Cape Cod. I’ll be back to covering Germany in a few weeks, not to worry!
Here is an email from reader Jeremy asking for help for Cape Cod:
“I am going to Hyannis (Cape Cod) in a few weeks with my mom. We were specifically wanted suggestions on what to do and where to eat. We will be there for four days and have a car rented. Thank you.”
While I’d love to gather reader recommendations, I also want to provide my own information. Being from Boston, I’ve spent a ton of time in Cape Cod. My personal thought is that the further out you go in the Cape, the more “Capey” it gets (not sure if Capey is a word, but I use it often!). Although, I am actually most familiar with the areas not far from the bridge – Mashepee and Falmouth. While these areas are great for weekend getaways, if you have more time, I’d recommend going out further to the elbow/tip of the cape for a long vacation. If driving, make sure to take into consideration Cape traffic as it can get brutal. There are only two bridges (Sagamore and Bourne) to get you to the Cape and they can both get pretty packed entering on a summers Friday afternoon/night or leaving on a summer Sunday. The Cape really is great, but be prepared for some expensive summer hotel rates! If you can go mid-week, you will get a much better deal. The Chatham Bars Inn is a great hotel, but with a high ticket price!
I also recommend going to either Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket. If you are only going for the day, Martha’s Vineyard is a shorter trip from Falmouth (Woods Hole) and Hyannis. Once the ferry lets you off in Martha’s Vineyard it is very easy to walk around. You can also bring your bike or rent a bike there. Getting to Nantucket is a little more expensive and leaves from Hyannis or Harwich Port.

Visit Osterville. 5-10 minute drive from Hyannis. Great shops and fantastic seafood at Wimpy’s. Also, go to Four Seas for ice cream in Centerville – a shop started by a local teacher years ago and open seasonally. If you’re up for a slightly longer drive in the other direction, check out Chatham for the shops and beaches.
One of the best places to visit mid-Cape is Rock Harbor in Orleans. At high tide, it’s only a small beach and boat launching point. However, at low tide, this completely changes, as a beautiful sand bar almost 2 miles long emerges. You can walk far out into the bay, watch fish, crabs, and birds in the tidal pools, and also catch some sun. The walk is very easy; I’ve brought my grandparents here and the soft, wet sand is very easy on the feet. It is truly breathtaking, but you must must go at low tide only, as this entire sandbar is underwater at high tide.
