Welcome to another post of helping a reader travel!

This weekly post is to help readers get a ton of travel advice from thousand of Deals We Like blog readers. Thus far, we’ve been able to help other readers travel to a slew of domestic and international destinations. Check out recent destinations and comment on suggestions here.

A few weeks ago a reader wrote in asking for Germany. I was able to cover Germany as a whole, but wanted to hit on many of the major tourist cities within the country as well. This will include: MunichBerlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne, and any others that are requested.

This week is going to be dedicated on Frankfurt. Here are some things I am sure readers will want suggestions on:

  • Where to stay
  • How many days to stay
  • Sites to see
  • Recommended restaurants
  • Anything else you might think is valuable!

If you’ve ever been to Germany, specifically Frankfurt, let’s help out reader Dianna and I am sure many other interested readers!

Also, if you have any upcoming travel where you need some help, feel free to email me at dealswelike@gmail.com to be a featured “Help a Reader Travel” Monday special. Thanks!

Why Frankfurt? Many flights go there but Frankfurt is primarily a business, not tourism, destination. It’s not that there isn’t anything to see (there are some good museums) but almost any traveler’s time in Germany is better spent elsewhere. With Germany’s excellent transport infrastructure, getting out of Frankfurt is easy and quick. Some suggestions that are not too far:

– Mainz – Wine town and home of Gutenberg
– Rhine Valley – Great wines and beautiful scenery
– Mosel – Less dramatic but in some ways prettier than the Rhine valley
– Marburg – Attractive university town
– Heidelberg – Another attractive university town, beautiful ruined castle, but rather touristy
– Cologne – If you’re looking for a big city, Cologne is far more interesting and only 1 hr away by fast train
– Farther afield but still very easy to reach by train: Freiburg, Goettingen, Bamberg, and Regensburg, all very beautiful smaller towns. Bamberg is a particular favorite of mine, with great brews, beautiful architecture from almost every period, and a great setting on the river, plus it’s not overrun by tourists like Heidelberg sometimes can be.

Meant to add that Frankfurt is architecturally not a highlight of Germany in large part because of wartime bombing, and much of the rebuilding was functional, shall we say. Every picture you see of Frankfurt in tourist brochures is of the Roemer, on one square which has been “restored” but that’s about it – almost everything else in Frankfurt is fairly ugly modern architecture (and no I don’t think all modern architecture is ugly – Berlin has some great cutting edge contemporary architecture from the last 20 yrs).

We did the above landing in FRA at 1035am got done about 10pm that night and stayed at HOTEL: ibis Frankfurt Centrum was cheap but central located to train station and to everything. We walked everywhere.

That is it. You are done with FRA move on !
