Last week I hit on Vietnam as a whole, but I want to touch upon many of the major tourist cities throughout the country. This will include Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Halong Bay, (let me know of this are any other cities you want me to cover)
This week is going to be dedicated to Hoi An, Vietnam. Here are some things I am sure readers will want suggestions on:
- Where to stay?
- How many days to stay
- Sites to see
- Recommended restaurants
- Anything else you might think is valuable!
Let’s help out the reader Gene who originally requested this help along with other readers looking to plan a trip to Vietnam!

Intercontinental Danang is amazing… A memory.
Hyatt Danang also a good option with Hoi An shuttles and right on beach with a great regency Club.
Morning Glory is by far the best restaurant in town. If you’re going during a busy season make reservations. It’s affordable. Also if you are interested in taking a cooking course the Red Bridge Cooking School is wonderful and you get a market tour and boat ride with it as well. Don’t stay in Da Nang. Stay in Hoi An, beautiful old town. If you want clothes made you will need to stay at least four days.
we stayed here 3 months ago – brand new – good value:

This is the best restaurant IMHO. A wide selection of Vietnamese street food in a restaurant setting. make a ressie.

4 days my arse… I’m currently wearing a suit I got made in Hoi An for $100 in 8 hours!! And it’s great! In fact, so good that I got back in touch with the shop from here in the UK and got them to make me a suit for my wedding. Eagerly awaiting the parcel delivery. There’s so many tailors in the town it’s hard to choose which. We went with Yaly Couture but don’t be scared about shopping around.
Staying in Hoi An is totally recommended. Also, see if you can do a bicycle tour (or at least rent a bike and got to the coast), ride a water buffalo (hilarious!!) and do some cooking.
Finally, try all the street food. It’s amazeballs. And have some Bia Hoi (fresh beer). Less than 20 cents a cup and not too bad either!

My wife and I just returned from a trip to Vietnam, including a couple days in Hoi An. We stayed at the Anantara Resort which, while not cheap, is truly wonderful and a definite cut above any other properties we saw in Hoi An. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again.
We stayed two nights which we thought was a bit too short. would stay at least 3 nights, maybe 4, but no more than that. It’s a very small town and aside from walking around shopping, eating, etc. there isn’t much to do. Still it has a nice vibe, and especially staying at the Anantara, we could have lingered a couple more days.
For restaurants check out Miss Ly’s. It’s excellent, and very popular – reservations recommended.
We spent 5 days in Hoi An a few years back. Don’t bother with these pricey resorts listed in the comments- for $22, we stayed at Thien Thanh, a small guesthouse in the old town. It had an ensuite bath, free breakfast (on the deck, overlooking the rice paddies), free wi-fi, a pool, a swim-up bar, a double bed that they dusted with rose petals, and a lovely owner. Most Vietnamese guest houses are this price and style. Only chumps pay $75+ for rooms in Vietnam. 🙂
For food- there is an amazing street stall market by the river. Everything is good. Any of the open-air restaurants lining the river are fantastic, cheap, and offer cooking classes for around $10.
Stay during a full moon- the Full Moon Festival is basically a night market/street fair, and tons of fun.
I had a dress, shoes, purses, and shirts made. I don’t know where these people went, but I got mine made in under 24 hours!!! Go to small local tailors in open-air shops.
Rent bikes, and ride around the ped-only Old Town; then ride out to Cua Dai Beach and rent a seaside beach chair for about $1.
Take a day trip to visit My Son- a bus ride in Vietnam is easy, comfy, and about $1/per hour of travel.
I loved Vietnam. Friendly, cheap, fun, and amazing.
+1 to biking to Cua Dai beach. Bikes can be rented for $1 per day all over town.
Another great $20 guest house is the Hoanh Trinh Hotel. Ensuite bathroom, free breakfast and wifi, but no pool at this hotel.
Had a great dinner at the Streets International run by a friendly expat from Brooklyn and run as a training employment spot for former street kids. Delicious Vietnamese favorites.
Though beautiful and charming, we found Hoi An overrun by tourists and touts. We took bikes on the local ferry across to Cam Kim Island, where we found no other tourists, examples of traditional reed mat making and boat building.
We had our clothes made at Micky Tailor at 44Tran Hung Dao. Super quality and a 24 hour turnaround.
Have a great trip!
