This weekly post is to help readers get a ton of travel advice from thousand of Deals We Like blog readers. Thus far, we’ve been able to help other readers travel to a slew of domestic and international destinations. Check out recent destinations and comment on suggestions here.
A few weeks ago a reader wrote in asking for Germany. I was able to cover Germany as a whole, but wanted to hit on many of the major tourist cities within the country as well. This will include: Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne. Unless you have other Germany destinations, this will be the last of this series!
This week is going to be dedicated to Cologne, Germany. Here are some things I am sure readers will want suggestions on:

I spent 2 days in Cologne last year. It is easy to get to by train and is close to Dusseldorf by train as well. I stayed at the Courtyard Marriott by the train station. There is a huge cathedral and lots of shopping. Don’t go Cologne on Sunday as many places/shops are closed.
I spent 3 days there in May. I was blown away at what a great town it is! I stayed at the HIlton next to the train station/cathedral and thought it was actually quite good. Left my wallet in a taxi – he returned it to my Hotel!!! Where else does that happen? Friendly people,wonderful Rhine river front cafes. As Europe goes I thought it was extremely affordable vs England or Switzerland. I cant wait to go back.
I’ve stayed at the Hyatt (on the riverfront) and the Pullman in the city center. Both are nice but the Pullman location is better for dining and shopping. The cathedral is impressive. Check out the beer gardens and local beers.
Stayed four days in Cologne in April. There is really good award availability on AA from ORD to DUS, I got a whole row to myself. The regional rail from will take you from DUS into Cologne relatively quickly. The Hilton in Cologne is only a few blocks from the main train station and downtown, the Courtyard Marriott is much new but farther. We got a good rate only about 145 dollars a night.
1. See the main cathedral, take a tour offered in the morning. Walking up the circular staircase to the top was worth it.
2. Walk in the botanical gardens, they arent too far by the metro.
3. There are many smaller churches throughout the city, pop your head in just to see how pretty they are.
4. The National Socialist museum displays some of the country’s less desirable history
Day trips:
Dusseldorf – I didnt find that exciting, lots of places to eat on the waterfront
Remagen – Quant little german town farther down the Rhine, interesting museum devoted to the allies in WWII. Not much else to do there.
