Hertz just announced a massive change to their award chart. It includes a major devaluation without any notice. I find it quite disappointing when loyalty programs make changes “effective immediately” and do not give their members the opportunity to redeem the points they’ve earned assuming the old chart in mind.
Here is their old award chart
And now their new award chart
Right off the bat you can see that a one day rental went from 675 Gold Plus Reward points to 750 Gold Plus Reward points. A weekly rental also went from 2,750 Gold Plus Reward points to 3,750 Gold Plus Reward points. They also got rid of the Weekend Awards, which were a great redemption for members. Based on The Gates extensive analysis, you can see that prices increased anywhere between 11% to 81%. That is one massive change — especially with no prior notice.
Overall…
I do not collect Hertz Gold Plus Reward points, so this does not have a major impact on me. However, I know many business travelers who rent with Hertz on a weekly basis will be extremely disappointed. This is a good reason to not hoard points. Earn and burn and then you won’t be out of luck when these devaluations happen so suddenly.
Fortunately though, Daily Getaways has adjusted their points so you will not face the devaluation. The Hertz packages are on sale this upcoming Wednesday and they increased their package amounts, but kept the price the same. I appreciate Daily Getaways doing this and taking the hit.
