Just last week, Hyatt announced that they would be offering some customer-friendly extensions due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. That includes status being extended an entire year. This means those with Discoverist, Explorist or Globalist status as of March 31, 2020 will have that same status through Feb. 28, 2022.

Hyatt originally stated that this status would be updated no later than April 15th, but it looks like that day has already arrived. When I checked my Hyatt account this morning, I noticed that our Globalist status was given a new date — February 28, 2022.

This means you do not need to earn the full 60 nights this year to maintain our Globalist status. With that being said, there are some benefits that you receive only when hitting certain milestone benefits, and not necessarily the equivalent status. If you are looking for the big perks, like confirmed suite upgrades and free night certificates, you’ll need to hit those milestones.

  • 20 nights: Earn 2 Club Lounge awards
  • 30 nights: Earn 2 more Club Lounge awards, plus a category 1-4 free night certificate
  • 40 nights: Select one of three options — bonus points, $100 gift gift card or a FIND Experience Savings.
  • 50 nights: 2 Suite Night awards
  • 60 nights: 2 more Suite Night awards, plus a category 1-7 free night certificate, plus a My Hyatt Concierge Agent
  • 70, 80, 90 and 100 nights: Select one of two options — 10,000 bonus points or one more Suite Night award

So if you already have Globalist status, for example, you can maintain it until Feb. 2022 without stepping foot into a Hyatt property this year. But, you will not receive the above milestone benefits. In my family, we already have 24-nights, so I am expecting we will have more Hyatt nights this year, but I am truly not sure how many. It really depends how the current virus shakes out. I also have three suite night awards in my account already, so my goal this year will probably to hit the 50-night mark to get two more. Typically, I would spend more on my World of Hyatt credit card to get to the 60-night mark and lock in Globalist status, but now that won’t really matter. (With the co-branded credit card, with every $5,000 spent you receive 2 more nights towards status).

Now, if you are looking to earn a higher status than you currently have, then you can still partake in Hyatt’s status match and challenge promotion. This is for participating corporate employers, but you do have until November to enroll, so hopefully we will all be back to traveling by then.

For all other extensions, such as free night certificates and suite upgrades, it seems like there is still a lag for the certificates that expire in April. Hyatt states that awards that were set to expire in March, will be replaced on April 20, 2020. For all awards expiring after that, they will update in your account by the 20th of the month in which the award would have originally expired. I have a few expiring in April — that were supposed to be used for our trip to Disneyland — and those have yet to be updated with a new expiration date. My assumption is I will see them updated on the 20th of this month.

For now, I am happy to see my Hyatt status extended and I am glad that we can lay low for the rest of the year and not have to worry about actually earning it with the current situation at hand.
