IHG just announced that they will in fact be extending the free night certificates that come along with both the old IHG Select card and the new IHG Rewards Club Premier card. Originally, certificates that were set to expire March 1 through Dec. 31, 2020 were extended though Dec. 31, 2020, and while this was a great extension back in the Spring, COVID-19 is still going strong and many people are still not traveling.

With this new extension policy, all certificates that were originally extended will be extended again through Aug. 31, 2021. This will give you another eight months to use your certificate, which should make many members quite happy.

Additionally, all new certificates that were newly issued in 2020 will also have an 18 month redemption time period, instead of the typical 12 month expiration date.

I am happy to see IHG finally getting onboard with the customer-friendly extension policies. Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott have already announced extensions for their free night certificates and many other benefits, and it was about time IHG made a decision — kudos to them for finally doing so.

Hopefully though, those uncapped certificates where you could use them at any IHG property will stay uncapped.

You should see the new expiration date in your account at some point over the next week. If you try calling IHG right now, they may or may not be aware of the extension, so give them a few days to get on board. But, you’ll automatically see the certificate extended anyways.
