JetBlue is offering both a discount and a bonus for purchasing JetBlue True Blue points. This is a tiered offer where you can receive up to a 30% discount on the purchasing price, plus a 10% bonus on the points received. This promotion goes through Nov. 27, 2019.
If you go all in and purchase the maximum 30,000 points, that will net you 33,000 JetBlue TrueBlue points. It will also cost you $577.50.
Unfortunately though, purchasing JetBlue points will typically not be a good deal. Since JetBlue has a fixed redemption program, points are usually worth about 1.5 cents per point. With this promotion, if you purchase in the top tier, you are buying points at a cost of 1.88 cents per point. This means purchasing points for more than they are worth will not be a cost effective way to travel for less — in fact it will cost you more.
With that being said, it could be worth purchasing points if you just need a few more points in your account to redeem for a free night. The cost to purchase that small number of points could be significantly less than purchasing the flight outright. Although, at the lower tier level, you are only getting a 10% discount. You’ll still receive the 10% bonus, but you’ll ultimately be purchasing points at 2.76 cents per point. This is quite high and almost double the cost of their value.
If you are low on JetBlue points and need a few to redeem for a free flight, then this could be worthwhile. Otherwise, this promotion is not for the masses. It could also make more sense for those with the JetBlue Credit Card. If you have the JetBlue Plus card, you’ll receive 10% of your points back when you redeem them for a free flight. This could help make the promotion slightly more worthwhile.
Also keep in mind that buying JetBlue points is also processed by points.com and will not code as travel. This means credit cards that give category bonuses for “travel” will still only earn you the regular number of points and will not trigger any travel credits.
