Early in October, Southwest launched an awesome promotion for those who reside in California – apply for 1 of their 3 co-branded Southwest credit cards (get approved and meet the minimum spend) and you’ll automatically earn the Southwest Companion Pass. This is an amazing opportunity for those looking to earn the pass! You can learn more about the promotion and apply for the respective credit cards here.

The Details

If you are a California resident (and your Southwest account lists your California address), all you have to do is apply for one of the Southwest Airlines credit cards, meet the minimum spend requirement, and the Companion Pass is yours! Typically, to earn the Southwest Companion pass you have to earn 110,000 qualifying points. And if you want to go the credit card route to earn the Companion Pass, it typically requires applying for 2 credit cards, so this is a significantly easier method!

In addition to the Companion Pass, you’ll also receive the sign up bonus points. Both the personal cards are currently offering 40,000 points, while the business card is offering 60,000 points. Just keep in mind that you are not eligible for the card if you currently have the card or have received a sign up bonus in the past 24 months. With that being said, there are three cards, so if you have not yet applied for one of them here is your chance! You must, however, sign up for the card through the links provided in the promotional site – do not sign up for any random link you find via Google or through a bloggers link.

With this offer, you’ll receive the Companion Pass through December 31, 2018. While earning the pass for 1 year for just opening up 1 card is awesome, if you’d prefer to earn it through the end of 2019, you can still open up two cards (a business card for 60,000 points + a personal card for 40,000 points) and put an additional 10,000 on the cards in 2018 and earn the pass for all of 2018 and 2019. You can read more about this strategy here (although note that the card offers have changed since writing this prior post).

Who is taking advantage of this awesome opportunity? I’ve already locked in my Southwest Companion Pass for next year, but if I haven’t, I might have considered moving to California!
