Marriott Ups the Current Promotion – Earn More Points with Every Brand

About a month ago Marriott announced their new MegaBonus promotion which quite honestly is not so “mega”. With this promotion, there are two different ways to earn points:

  • Earn 2,000 bonus points on all stays of two or more nights
  • Earn 1,000 bonus points per brand, starting with your second stay

a screenshot of a websiteNow, a month or so after the promotion launched, they’ve added another element to earn more points. Due the recent Marriott and Starwood merger, there are now 29 brands in total under the Marriott umbrella. For those who like hoping from one brand to another, this promotion will benefit you. Starting with your second brand stay, you’ll earn the following additional points:

  • Stay at 10 brands – earn 10,000 additional bonus points
  • Stay at 29 brands – earn 29,000 additional bonus points

While I am happy to see that they added another point earning opportunity, this still isn’t anything to write home again. While some will stay at 10 different brands, not many will stay at 29 brands. I also wouldn’t spend more to stay at one brand over the other since 10,000 bonus points at the end of the day isn’t worth it.

Even if you do not think you’ll be taking advantage of this promotion, remember to register just in case – you must register by January 7, 2019. This promotion also runs September 26 through January 31, 2019.

Missed opportunity. If they had made it aspirational like 290,000 points for hitting all 29 brands that could’ve garnered quite some press. I’d imagine the odds of someone actually achieving that would be quite difficult and costly since some of their luxury brands would cost quite a pretty penny. 29,000 is nice, but can’t envision anyone bending over backwards to achieve that paltry.

Is there a tracker to show which brands I’ve visited during the promotion period?

I don’t think this is a very good promotion to entice people to stay at the combined SPG/Marriott brand post merger life. 10,000 pts would have translated to 3,333 SPG points. SPG promos were much more lucrative and exciting. I’ve switched my stays this quarter to Hyatt.
