Another blog post by Mr. Deals…
A few weekends ago, Mrs. Deals and I were back in her hometown for a family gathering. I should mention that our mode of travel was by way of car, no points were used or earned during this travel (aside from fueling the car with my American Express Business Gold card because it offers 2x points on fuel – how do you like that Mrs. Deals?). Back to the story now. So while at the event a bunch of folks are talking to Mrs. Deals about this little blog of hers. After they were done telling her how much they loved my Sunday posts, they started really getting into all the credit cards and trips they are starting to take.
I quickly realized that my wife has built a community of second generation “dinks.” Rather than no kids, its those whose kids are out of the home and they have both time and money to take some trips. The funny thing was hearing some of the challenges and successes they were experiencing. First off, many people were experiencing the same issues I wrote about a few weeks back, see: Mr. Deals is sick of getting yelled at! To all of you who are reading right now, I feel your pain. It’s too tough to figure out which card to use.
As I listened to them more and more it dawned on me that Mrs. Deals has become a fixture in their social outing conversations. And what was scary was how amplified the discussion became with the presence of Mrs. Deals. I’d be lying if I said I was a bit disappointed no one was asking me for Amtrak travel advice!
Now, I do have to note, it was only the women that I saw participating in this chatter, which makes me wonder, do their husbands or significant others ask questions like I do? Hmmm…

Now seriously – it is not that hard to figure out which card to use! My husband finally put some notes in his phone so he wouldn’t have to call me every time – LOL
@Anne – That is great! I get those phone calls many times!
I used a label machine and put stickers on all the cards that have multipliers on certain kinds of expenses. For example, on my plat AMEX:
No F/X
3x airfare
It really helps me chose the right card for each purchase.
@Carol – We are working on Mr. Deals here! I must admit though, he’s come a long way!
I just post a monthly calendar for my wife to use to keep track of bonus categories and which new credit card we need to meet spend on and sent her a text monthly.
