For awhile, the only Hyatt hotel in NYC was the Grand Hyatt above Grand Central Station. Over the past few years three we saw three more added, which was a huge success. Now, starting at the beginning of 2013 you will have two more options: 1) Hyatt Union Square, and 2) Hyatt Place New York/Midtown-South. This will now give tourists a total of six Hyatt options when staying in NYC. This will give you a variety of locations, type of hotels, and point redemption requirements.
Here is a breakdown of the six Hyatt hotels (the average costs were pulled from a random date in January so will clearly change during peak and off-peak timeframes, they are primarily given so you can compare between hotels as many of the rates I pulled seem to be on the lower-end):
- Hyatt Union Square
- Category = 18,000 points/night (category 5)
- Location = 13th and Park Avenue South. This is right in Union Square which is personally one of my favorite areas in town. The subway there has many train lines to take you all around the city. It is also relatively close the East Village and Soho, while not being too far from mid-town and Grand Central.
- Average cost = $299 (weekday); $299 (weekend)
- Hyatt Place New York/Midtown-South
- Category = 15,000 points/night (category 4)
- Location = 35th and 6th. It is right near the famous Macy’s and Herald square. You are close to Penn Station and about 7 blocks from the start of Times Square. Not my favorite area of town at all.
- Average cost = $251 (weekday); $195 (weekend)
- Grand Hyatt New York
- Category = 22,000 points/night (category 6)
- Location = 42nd and Park Avenue. This hotel is above Grand Central station where you do not need to go outside to get to the hotel. The hotel has also been recently renovated. This is in a very business area, but many tourists like it as you are very central to everything and the train station right below can get you wherever. From here you can walk to Rockefeller station and Times Square. You are also not too far away from the shopping area on 59th Street (Bloomingdales).
- Average cost = $239 (weekday); $199 (weekend)
- Andaz 5th Avenue
- Category = 22,000 points/night (category 6)
- Location = 41st and 5th. I personally like this location right near Bryant Park. It is also very close to Grand Central and Times Square as well. The train options aren’t as convenient, but you are a just a short walk away from Grand Central trains.
- Average cost = $328 (weekday); $292 (weekend)
- Hyatt 48 Lex
- Category = 15,000 points/night (category 4)
- Location = 48th and Lexington. This is on the East side of the city, but still walking distance to Rockefeller Center and Times Square. This is also relatively close to the bottom of Central Park which starts on 60th street. There is a train station right near the hotel as well.
- Average cost = $399 (weekday); $319 (weekend)
- Andaz Wall Street
- Category = 22,000 points/night (category 6)
- Location = Wall Street (at the cross section of Water Street). While all the other Hyatt locations are semi-close to one another, this one is almost as South as you can get on the island. This is down on Wall Street in the business district, close to the World Financial Center. On the weekends many things are closed as the area is really catered towards business people. The hotel, however, is close to the South Street Seaport which is a nice area to walk around.
- Average cost = $274 (weekday); $212 (weekend)
If you are looking to redeem points, the best value by far is the Hyatt 48 Lex. It only requires 15,000 points/night, which is amazing. If you are a Diamond member, you will also get a voucher to use at the restaurant Lexington Brass. While I have never personally slept over at this hotel (or any of the Hyatt hotels in NYC for that matter), I have been in the hotel and a guest room. Overall, I was extremely pleased. While the new Hyatt Place will be the same number of points for a free night, I really really just do not like the location. Maybe it is because I live in NYC and the area is so overrun with tourists during the holiday period or business people during the weekday.
It also looks like a few more Hyatt hotels are in the works for a 2014 hotel opening: 1) Park Hyatt on 57th and 7th – very close to Central Park and across the street from Carnegie Hall, and 2) Hyatt Place on 41st and 6th – closer to Times Square. Way to go Hyatt with expanding your presence!

Definitely good to see the expansion. There is however a cluster of great, cheap hotels in Long Island City which is just over the river in Queens. They have a Four Points, Holiday Inn Express, Country Inn etc. Would love to see a Hyatt place in this area. Rates in this area are in the $150-300 a night range which is great given proximity to Manhattan

If you cross Hudson River and one PATH stop away from WTC, there is Hyatt Regency in Jersey City. Amazing Manhattan view from the restaurant as well as from some of the rooms. Westin, Marriott and Double Tree also in the same vicinity.
@RedHat – You are correct. I’ve been to that Hyatt and it is great and extremely convenient to the path and downtown NYC.
Gary I really like how you analyze both the point value and average rates. Few few bloggers do this. This is a great way to asses the best values point wise, such as the Lex property. I have done very well with SPG, but will be using some Hyatt properties in the next few years as well.
