I received an email from Southwest yesterday that through July 25, 2015 they are running a promotion where you can purchase their points with up to a 50% bonus. This is a tiered promotion so you’ll receive the following bonus based on the number of points you purchase:
- 4,000 – 10,000 points –> 30% bonus (costs 2.1 cents per point)
- 11,000 – 19,000 points –> 40% bonus (costs 1.96 cents per point)
- 20,000 points or more –> 50% bonus (costs 1.83 cents per point)
Points can be purchased in 1,00 increments (starting at 4,000 points) up to 60,000 points. This is also the best promotion I’ve seen for purchasing Southwest points, although it is still not a great deal. While a bonus always sounds great, Southwest has a fixed redemption program, so you’re still not get the value that they are worth, typically. But let’s go through the math to see when it might be worth it to purchase the points through this sale.
As mentioned above, Southwest has a fixed redemption where each point is worth 1.43 cents per point. So to buy points for more then they are worth is definitely NOT a good value. However, if you are close to redeeming for a flight and shy a few points, do the math to see if purchasing points will ultimately be worth it to redeem for a free flight.
Purchase Southwest points here and it will require you to sign into your Southwest account.

@doug – this was a copy and paste of an old post and although I updated it , it looks like it did not save correctly. I’ve updated accordingly.
I think you mean July 25th, right?
If someone has a companion pass, would they be buying the equivalent of 2.86 cents per point for 1.83?
