Starting today, June 11, if you have status on American or US Airways you are eligible for upgrades on the other airline. So if you have status with American you are eligible for an upgrade when flying US Airways and if you have status with US Airways you are eligible for an upgrade when flying on American. Of course their are stipulations though, when flying…
- American: Upgrades are complimentary only for US Airways members with Chairman’s Preferred status. Those with Platinum, Gold, and Silver Preferred will need to pay $30 per 500 miles of travel.
- US Airways: Upgrades are complimentary for those with American elite status + one companion on the same reservation.
For both situations, upgrades are available only 24 hours ahead of time.
With this announcement, it was also sad that US Airways Dividend miles will be combined into the American Advantage program in 2015. There will no option to transfer miles freely between accounts before then. You can read more about these updates on the American site and US Airways site.

So in other words we are better booking as an AA elite on US metal due to lower upgrade fee’s.
Danin, it’s more complex than that. US Silvers get upgraded 2+ days out, and higher US elites even earlier. So as an AA elite, even a PLT, you’ll be behind all of them. So if getting the upgrade is top priority, then you may be better off on AA metal. But if saving money is top priority, then yes, US would be cheaper.
