American Express is currently running an awesome promotion for using your Amex cards at participating NYC merchants. I’ve written about this promo in detail here and have fully taken advantage myself. Unfortunately, the number of registrants was limited and the maximum number of Cardmembers have already registered.

For those of you who have already registered though, remember – the promotion ends this Wednesday, February 29th. You will receive a $50 statement credit when spending $200 at 2 or more participating New York City merchants. Once you hit the terms of the promotion, you will receive an email within 24 hours letting you know. You should also see the $50 statement credit within a week of receiving this email.

Between my husband and I we actually have 6 American Express credit cards: 2 Starwood, Hilton, The New Business Gold Premier Card, Macys, and Bloomingdales. We went to Costco and purchased $200 in gift cards per card – giving us $1,200 total. We then went to our local Ricky’s NYC and purchased 6 items, 1 per card about $1.50 per item – mostly candy! This promotion essentially got us $1,200 in Costco purchases for $900. I look at this as 25% off all Costco grocery shopping for probably the next year! We shop here regularly, so I am very excited over this savings!

Some blog readers have emailed me with success on purchasing gift cards via the phone as they live outside of NYC. If you already registered, this might be an option to hit your $200 spend at 2 NYC merchants. Additionally, since I purchased at two separate stores, I am not sure if two purchases at the same store will work. Does anyone have any success with this?

Overall, I am thrilled with this promotion. Amex has been running some great statement credit promotions this past year and is one of the mail reasons that I am currently LOVING AMEX! Essentially, all these statement credits is paying for my annual fee, plus lots more! Good job Amex!

Can you please list the stores that will do this from some of your emails? I tried a few stores and it didn’t work for me.

@CodeAdam10 – Not that I know of, however, they do sell AA gift cards, along with many others.
