Saving Even More Money at Kohl’s

This is an update to a post I wrote a few days ago about an easy way to get 20% off Kohl’s gift cardsFor those interested, this offer is still going on until end of day today (Friday November 21). This is an amazing gift card offer, however, you might notice that the Kohl’s website is ridiculously more expensive than their competitors. I checked out a bunch of items and was beyond shocked to see how inflated the prices were. And this was even taking into consideration any promotion codes from Kohl’s. While I wanted to order from Kohl’s as they have an amazing return policy (essentially no time length and a no questions asked policy), I absolutely did not want to pay a higher price.

With that being said, I called Kohl’s and asked about price matching an order from online. They said absolutely and you can even use a coupon code on top of the matched price. Although one major caveat, you can only apply a coupon code up to 15% off. Fair enough as many competitors would not allow you to use a coupon on top of the price match. If you are purchasing an item today, you can use their 20% off Friends & Family code, although you’ll only get 15% off.  Use code YESFAM20.

For example, I was looking into purchase a play kitchen for my 18 month old that was on sale for $202 at Kohl’s. At Kmart and Toys R Us the item was on sale for $134.99. Many other stores were priced at $144.99. A huge price difference. So they were easily able to match the $134.99 price and then take 15% off from that which brought the price down to $125ish after tax. I then applied a $100 Kohl’s gift card which I purchased for $80, so ultimately paid $105 for the item after tax and no shipping fee.

Some things to know:

  • Kohl’s only price matches to national non-wholesale stores that have an actual store front. For example, Kmart, Toys R Us, Walmart, Target, etc. They DO NOT price match to Costco, Amazon, etc.
  • When purchasing over the phone, you will not be able to get extra points/miles/cash back by going through an online shopping portal first.
  • Since you need to order over the phone, make sure the representative gets all your information correct. And make sure to double check the email confirmation you received. I found out they typed in the incorrect shipping address and that has resulted in over four phone calls to get it fixed. And it is still not resolved!

Overall, I am glad that Kohl’s makes it easy to price match, but I am very disappointed that their prices are so incredibly more expensive than any other retail store online. I spoke to a supervisor about this and they said it is because they send out coupons so often. I find this extremely deceiving and wrong, but I guess it is what it is.

If you plan on purchasing a gift card do know that it will not be sent immediately. It took exactly 6 hours and 5 minutes to be sent to me, which is the exact same amount of time it took another blogger I spoke with to receive his gift card. So keep this in mind if you are planning on making a purchase immediately.

I found with Kohl’s their prices are competitive as long as the item is one sale and you can use a coupon. For example, their mens watch like Bulova and Citizen. I have found that when on sale + using a 30% coupon from being a charge card holder (or 20% for everyone else) + the 3%-6% cash back from ebates, their price will normally beat Amazon’s. The big thing is you have to wait for the item to be on sale and then use a coupon. If the item is not on sale, the price, even with a coupon, will never be competitive.

Kohl’s is not a good deal. Any why would I bother to price match for 15% off unless I’ve got gift cards to burn. My time in calling is worth more than 15% most of the time.

If you like this deal though I would suggest you look at the current Saks off 5th deal that Dan’s Deal found for like 90% off. http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/55606
I just bought a $295 (competitively priced) handbag for $86 like this.
