I woke up this morning to see the most amazing tweet from Southwest Airlines – they are flying to Hawaii! Of course the details are vague as there are still many unknowns, but at least we now know that it will be in the near future!
While you can read the entire article from Southwest about their future service, here are some key notes:
- Southwest intends to sell tickets in 2018
- They are still in the process to obtain approval from the Federal Aviation Administration for Extended Operations (ETOPS)
- No specific schedule has yet been identified, but non-stop flights will most likely be from some major city in California
- They will start flying their ETOPS-equipped -800 fleet, but ultimately will be flying their new MAX aircrafts
So as of right now we are not sure if they will actually be able to begin service in 2018, or if it will not be until 2019. We also are not 100% sure of the exact routes, but if you live outside of California, chances of a non-stop flight are slim.
Do you think you’ll fly Southwest to Hawaii?! This will be an amazing opportunity for the Southwest Companion Pass!

Ummm, when are we going? Mr. Deals needs a surf trip 🙂
6 hrs on a SW flight! No thank you. I have done the East Coast – ORD to HNL flight and back via DEN. 12 hrs!! on SW is not a deal. peanuts for 6 hrs would kill me in those seats with out a movie even.
TomRI – Great! More seats for us! BTW, just download your iTunes movies onto you iPad or iPhone. How many Airlines now fly large planes from Calif to Hawaii? Not many if any. And free bags? And flying free on a SW Companion Pass? Sign me up!
Looking forward to your flights to Hawaii. Hope they begin sooner and in 2018. Will be booking
your startup flights and can’t wait!! Hopefully SWA will be flying out of San Diego to Hawaii!
Southwest isn’t flying to Hawaii. Southwest intends to eventually fly to Hawaii. And it’s only the “near future” if you consider at least a year and possibly longer “near.” #facts
Kinda grouchy? We know SW isn’t flying there right now. Read the article.
Delta uses some widebody aircraft to and from Hawaii and beyond.
