Starting November 1, 2015, Southwest will start flying to a new destination – Liberia, Costa Rica. This is great news and I love that they are adding more international beach routes. Southwest already services this country, but to San Jose airport which is about a 5 hour drive from Liberia. Many people also prefer one coast to the other so this will expand options and allow loyal Southwest travelers to fly into one airport and fly out of another if they wish to explore the entire country.

Currently, direct flights will primarily be from Houston Hobby (HOU) airport, although there will be Saturday-only service Baltimore (BWI). You’ll be able to fly in from another city if you are able to make the connecting flight in time. If you look at the route map below, the blue lines indicate routes where you can fly to Liberia with a layover in Houston or Baltimore. While I did not check every city pair, most of the East Coast cities will only route you through BWI, which means you are limited to flying only on Saturday’s.

Southwest is looking to fully expand their Houston presence for flights to the Caribbean and Mexico, so this will increase their presence and allow Texas-based travelers and those in the Midwest and West Coast to fly to some more desirable international East Coast destinations (although it is only select cities in the Midwest and West Coast due to layover options). Now that Southwest opened up their reservation schedule for flights through January 4, 2015, you can now book this new route!

Thanks to Points, Miles, and Martinis for making me aware of this new route!
