The third-party booking site Rocketmiles is offering 5,000 bonus Southwest points on every hotel reservation made through November 26, 2018. This is IN ADDITION TO the points you’ll already earn for the reservation. I searched a bunch of hotels and saw some that were offering as much as 25,000 Southwest points just by booking through Rocketmiles! You’ll need to book through this promotion page to earn the extra 5,000 points.
What is Rocketmiles?
Rocketmiles is a third-party hotel reservation site where you earn airline miles for your hotel stay instead of the hotel points by booking directly with the hotel. This is great for those looking to stay at non-hotel chains as they typically do not have any sort of loyalty program, or for those who would prefer airline miles instead. You also might not receive all of your status benefits at a chain hotel.
Hotel rates are typically the same as the best available rate if you were to book directly with the hotel. However, this doesn’t account for other discounts – AAA, Corporate Rates, Specials, etc. So ALWAYS ensure that you are getting the best rate possible. Typically, with non-chain rates is comes out to be the exact same, so you might as well earn those miles!
Earning Southwest Points
The amount of Southwest points you’ll earn is tied to the nightly rate — typically the higher the nightly rate, the more points you’ll earn, although there is no exact formula. Sometimes you might even see one hotel offering more points even though the rate is slightly less, so you’ll definitely want to do some research to get the best rate with the most amount of points. And for the next few days, you’ll earn an additional 5,000 points. When the promotion page suggests that only stays of 2+ nights will earn the 5k bonus points, I was able to see the offer apply to stays of 1 night as well, as long as the nightly price was high enough.
I even saw an opportunity to earn 23,000 Southwest points in New York City, although the nightly rate is quite high!
But even for a normal rate, I still saw many opportunities to earn 10,000-15,000 points, which is awesome! For example, I saw a $276/night rate in Brooklyn for a 1 night stay that will earn 10,000 Southwest points. At a value of 1.5 cents per Southwest points, that means you are earning $150 in Southwest points. This means the hotel is essentially costing you just $126 for the night or you are getting $150 in free travel — whichever way you want to think of it!
More Points Towards the Southwest Companion Pass!
The Southwest Companion Pass allows a friend or family member to fly with you for FREE an UNLIMITED number of times during the life of the pass. To earn the pass you need to accrue 110,000 qualifying points within a calendar year. Fortunately, points earned from Rocketmiles DO COUNT towards the pass! With one caveat… bonus points do not count! If Rocketmiles submits the points earned in two different batches, one with the regular amount of points you earned and another with the bonus points, only the regular points earned will count. So for the Brooklyn stay, for example, you’d earn 5,000 points towards the companion pass, not 10,000 points. This was at least my experience when I booked with Rocketmiles two years ago.
