Starwood’s current promotion is coming to an end on April 15th, but the good news is there will only be a two week hiatus for another promotion to start. Between May 1st and July 31st, you will get double SPG points on all eligible stays. Additionally, you can get a quick and easy 500 bonus points per stay just by booking your reservation through the spg.com mobile site or the iPhone/Android SPG app.
Like most hotel promotions, not all properties are participating in the promo (you can see a list of excluded hotels here). There’s a decent amount of them and it looks like many SPG hotels in London and NYC, for example, are excluded. Also like all other SPG promos, you MUST register for the promotion in advance. The registration site is not yet up but will be available at the end of the month. If you’d like a registration reminder, you can text SPG at 44264 in the US or 447950080934 in the UK.
While double points is nothing compared to the free night promos we saw in 2009, 2010, and 2011, it is a pretty straight forward promo which I like. No minimum nights required, no hotel hoping required to maximize, etc. – just stay like you always do and get the double points.

Actually, only about half of the NYC ones are excluded, not all.
if a hotel is booked via SPG app that is not participating in the double points promotion will the 500 (app book bonus) points still be applied?
@chris dreiss yes, according the SPG site:
“Get 500 bonus Starpoints for each eligible booking made through our spg.com mobile site, the SPG® App for iPhone® or the SPG App for Android™ — and that’s at all 1,100 hotels and resorts in the SPG program. Registration will begin in late April.”
I booked my stay for the Sheraton HK (not on exclusion list) for early July of this year, but I made the booking about a month ago. Half the stay is paid in points, half with cash– my credit card has already been charged. If I register for the promo when it opens, will I still get the double SPG points even though I booked before the promo opened AND already paid. Will I get the points after I check out?
