Yesterday I wrote about all the current and future Starwood and Marriott credit cards. I broke down the difference between the cards and the changes that are coming to the individual cards. During that post I mentioned that the Starwood credit cards will eventually be no longer available and the offer could change significantly, as early as today. And it looks like that has happened.
While the personal and business Starwood credit cards have not yet been pulled, the offer has changed significantly, and it is pretty bad! The offers used to always be at least 25,000 Starpoints after meeting the minimum spend requirements – worth at least $500 at Starwood hotels based on my 2 cent per point valuation. It is now an “up to $200 statement credit offer”.

New Offer Details- Earn a $100 statement credit after you make $1,000 in purchases on the Card within your first 3 months of Card Membership
- Plus, earn an additional $100 statement credit after your first purchase on the card at a participating SPG or Marriott Rewards hotel within your first 6 months of Card Membership. Terms Apply.
So not only does the offer require you to meet the minimum spend (which is less then the standard minimum spend requirement), you also must stay at a SPG or Marriott hotel in the near future.
I am quite dissapointed with the new offer and I personally wouldn’t recommend applying solely on the offer. Although come August 1st, there will be a few positive changes to the card. All cardmembers will receive a free yearly night certificate to use at any hotel that costs up to 35,000 points. In August, Marriott will introduce a 7 tier rewards category and category 5 will cost 35,000 points. So that means for essentially $95 a year, you will receive a “free” night certificate to use at many Starwood and Marriott properties. They have not yet announced which hotels will fall into their respective categories, so we are not yet sure how lucrative the certificate will be, but I assume you’ll always be able to receive at least a $95 value from it. Although I am not sure how high the value will really be.
