Top 10 Delta Credit Card Questions

Can I receive the sign up offer if I already have the Delta Gold card and now want to apply for the Delta Platinum card?

Answer: Yes! They are two different products and you eligible to receive the sign up offer if you are approved and meet the minimum spend requirement for a different Delta co-branded card. This applies to the personal vs. business cards as well – for instance, if you currently have the personal card you are eligible for the sign up offer for the business card.

Can I receive the sign up bonus if I am no longer a cardmember, but have had this card in the past (and received a sign up offer)?

Answer: Unfortunately, American Express changed their terms for BOTH their personal and business credit cards. This now states that if you’ve received an offer in the past, you will not be eligible for the sign up offer again. With that being said, all four cards are different products, so you are eligible to receive the sign up offer (if you apply and are approved) for one of the cards even if you have another version of the card.

What can I use the statement credit for?

Answer: Many times both the Delta Gold and Delta Platinum cards come with a statement credit offer. Both statement credits are valid for Delta purchases ONLY purchased through Delta directly. For example, purchasing a Delta flight on Delta.com with your Delta credit card will trigger the statement credit. However, purchasing a Delta flight through Orbitz will not! Also, if you are using miles for your next flight or it is already booked on a different credit card, you should be able to receive a statement credit for onboard snacks/drinks if charged to your Delta credit card (for Delta operated flights). Others have reported success purchasing a Delta gift card.

Which card will earn me MQMs?

Answer: The personal and business version of the Delta Platinum card will give you MQMs. There are two ways to get MQMs with the card: 1) With the initial sign up offer you’ll receive MQMs after meeting the minimum spend requirement, and 2) On an annual basis, if you make $25,000 in purchases on the card, you’ll get 10,000 MQMs; if you make $50,000 in purchases on the card in that same year, you’ll get an additional 10,000 MQMs. The Delta Gold card does not give you any additional MQM bonus.

Aside from the sign up bonus, what are the other perks of being a card member?

Answer: Just for having the card, you’ll receive: 1) First checked bag for free for both you and 8 other passengers on the same itinerary, 2) Priority boarding, 3) 20% in-flight savings, and 4) and discounted SkyClub access. Also, the Delta Platinum card waives the MQD (Medallion Qualification Dollar) requirement.

If I am eligible for either the personal or business version of the card, why should I get one over the other?

Answer: For the most part, the benefits of the personal and business cards are the same, with one exception. The business cards give you access to Amex OPEN Benefits. This means you get receive a 5% statement credit when you use your Amex Business card at many merchants, including: FedEx, Hertz, etc. You can read more about AMEX Open savings here.

How does the companion certificate work?

Answer: The companion certificate is a benefit that only comes with the Delta Platinum card. On an annual basis (starting 12 months after you sign up for the card), you’ll receive a companion certificate where another passenger can fly with you and you’ll only pay the applicable taxes and fees. It is a once a year certificate and can be gifted to friends or family members as well. You can read more about the Delta Companion Certificate here.

I want to redeem my miles pretty quickly after earning the miles for the sign up offer, but will not have enough for an international flight – any other ways to earn Delta miles quickly?

Answer: You can quickly transfer points from your Starwood account or American Express Membership Rewards account. Both programs transfer at a 1:1 ratio, but with Starwood for every 20,000 points transferred you’ll earn a 5,000 point bonus.

Will I lose my Delta miles if I eventually cancel the card?

Answer: No! Canceling co-branded hotel and airline cards will not impact your mileage account. If you apply for the card now and for whatever reason at a later date decide to cancel the card, will not lose the miles earned. They are safe in sound in your Delta account to be used whenever you desire.

Is this card and authorized user cards eligible for the Amex Offers?

Answer: Yes! Since this an American Express credit card, you are eligible to take advantage of the American Express statement credit offers. You’ll just need to sync your card to a Twitter account. You can also register for offers through your AmericanExpress.com account and going to your Delta tab. Additionally, authorized users (which do not cost an annual fee) are also eligible. So in theory one card can allow you to take advantage of these offers multiple times!
