Marriott is currently running a promotion where you can get a 20% bonus when you transfer your points to American’s AAdvantage loyalty program.
This promotion runs through October 31, 2014 and you should see the points appear in your account within 7 business days.
While, transferring points directly to American Airlines probably doesn’t make the most sense, you might be able to find a great value when redeeming your points for the “Hotel + Air” packages. Here is the Hotel + Air Package for American Airlines:
Marriott offers you various Hotel + Air packages which allows you to redeem your points for a seven night stay at the category of your choice, plus airline miles to help you get to your destination. In actuality, the airline miles are just transferred to your airline account and you do not actually have to use the miles alongside your free Marriott hotel nights. For those that are looking to stay at the same resort for seven nights, this is an excellent value for your points. The one exception is if you are going on an off-peak time and that particular hotel is offering PointSaver award redemptions at a lower price.
If you redeem for one of these awards, the amount of miles that is typically transferred over to American Airline miles will get a 20% bonus. You will also notice that there are four different levels for redeeming your points. Every increment you go up you are essentially getting a 1:1 value for your Marriott points converting to American miles. In my opinion, transferring for the highest number of Marriott points for that specific category award is well worth it! This is because American Airline miles are worth way more then Marriott points, maybe even double!
Let’s say you are looking to stay 7-night in a category 7 hotel. The best option for you is to transfer 330,000 Marriott points into a 7-night certificate and 120,000 American miles. If we value Marriott points at about And once the transfer goes through you’ll get a 20% bonus tacked onto those miles, so you’ll really be getting 144,000 American miles! To put a value on this – A few months ago I valued Marriott points at about .75 cents per point (related blog post). So these 330,000 points if redeemed at Marriott hotels could be worth around $2,475. I’d then value American Airline miles at about 1.7 cents per point. So those 144,000 American miles at $2,448. So the values come pretty close, but remember, with the 144,000 American Airline miles you also get a 7-night stay at a category 7 hotel! So if you have enough Marriott points to redeem and are looking at an extended stay, this can be a great value! Even without the bonus, this Hotel + Air Package is worth looking at in the future.

The problem is I am way short of 200000 marriott points to start with.
@Jack – That is the main problem with taking advantage of this.
