This news is very exciting for me as I currently live in NYC with an 11-month old! Uber is launching uberFAMILY, where the on-demand car service will have car seat options for those looking to take a taxi with their little one.
This is beyond convenient for so many reasons:
- Once your little one grows out of the infant car seat, to take those massive car seats in a taxi is just not feasible.
- With many strollers (the Uppababy Vista, for example) you can only have the car seat or regular seat option attached to the stroller, not both! This means your baby is sitting in the car seat for the rest of the day, which is probably not the most enjoyable. I know my 11-month old would be less then thrilled! And even if you have a stroller with both options (City Mini, for example), you probably do not want to be stuck holding a car seat all day.
- If you are out and about and last minute decide to take a cab home, you are out of luck since you do not have a car seat with you. I know many will just hold their baby in the taxi, but I am not into that.
To get this option on your Uber app, you will need input the promotion code FAMILY on the promotions screen on your phone. This will unlock this option and allow you to see it on your dashboard.
Now, I have yet to try this option (as it literally just launched a few hours ago) so I have no idea what car seats they have installed. There will also be a $10 surcharge for this service, although that premium is waived between now and Mothers Day.
If anyone has the opportunity to try it out, feel free to report back with your thoughts.
New users who sign up for Uber through a referral link will get a $10 credit in their account to use for a future ride. At times there are better new user credits available via Groupon, Living Social, etc. and I will make sure to promote those when available!Â

They don’t have infant car seats so just from 12 months and up,
Also they only have 1 car seat per car.
@sruly – I didn’t expect more then 1 car seat per car, but good to know that they won’t work for infants. Thanks for letting me know!
