Updated: The new changes are already in effect.
Just a year ago Wyndham made a massive change to their award chart. Previously all hotels were priced at a fixed 15,000 Wyndham Reward points a night, but then a three tier award structure was put in place. While many hotels stayed at the same 15k points per night, some were slashed in half, while others were doubled.
- Tier 1: 7,500 points for a free night
- Tier 2: 15,000 points for a free night
- Tier 3: 30,000 points for a free night
Then, just two weeks ago, Wyndham announced that they’d be re-categorizing many of their properties. Out of their 9,200+ properties, 500 hotels will move down in the number of points while 300 will move up in points. Out of the 300 moving up, which are the ones you should be focusing on now, 220 of them are moving up to the Tier 2 level and 80 of them are moving up to the Tier 3 level.
Of course this is a small number of properties overall, but I do foresee some of the more gems being affected. And unfortunately, Wyndham is not releasing a list of the properties being affected until after the changes into take place on, February 11, 2020. This means you have until end of day today to make a reservation at the current point price.
As long as you lock in your reservations now, if your booked hotel does move up to a higher point level, you’ll pay the lower rate. If you are sitting on a decent amount of Wyndham points and you are looking to make a reservation at one of their higher-end 15,000 point properties, you might want to consider making that reservation now. Of course, if you make a reservation and that property in fact moves down a level, you can always get the difference in points back.
I am definitely making some reservations now to lock in the potential lower price. I personally had a great stay at the Wyndham in Newport, Rhode Island last summer and my family is looking to stay there again this upcoming year.

I think the new prices are already in effect. A hotel I booked in San Francisco (Days Inn) was originally 15,000 points but now showing as 30,000. Wyndham site also suggests that changes are effective today.
Just yesterday I canceled my barclay wyndham card.
