Earlier this morning I posted about an Amazon.com offer that is ending tonight. While is is a great way to get $20 off a $20+ purchase at Amazon.com, it is intended to be targeted.

But… a few readers emailed me letting me know that they were able to get customer service involved and the $20 off was manually at the checkout page. While my husbands account was targeted for this promotion and I already took advantage, my account was not targeted. So I went ahead, added a $25 merchant gift card to my card and then started chatting with customer service.

You can search for merchant gift cards here. Or you can just make a regular Amazon.com purchase here.

You can initiate a customer service chat by going to this Amazon pageSelect the “Something Else” tab,  “Promotions and deals” from the drop down menu, and click “Chat”.

AmazonYou can tell the customer service rep: “I have my membership rewards account linked to my amazon account and I am trying to use a promotion code for paying with my membership reward points. The promotion code is SWP20AMR. It keeps on telling me the offer isn’t valid.” After about 5 minutes, I placed my order, and as a one time exception the customer service rep manually adjusted the price by $20. So I ended up paying $4.99 for my $25 gift card. Plus I used 1 Amex Membership Reward point.

Now, I do not know if this will work for those who DO NOT have an American Express Membership Rewards account tied to their account. You can always try, but the real intent for this promotion was to get people to start paying for Amazon.com purchases with their Membership Reward points.

Make sure to read this prior post to learn more about this promotion! I LOVE free Amazon money!

What is a merchant gift card? Will an amazon gift card work?

FYI – they also make an exception if there’s 3rd party items in the cart:

“In this case, I can see that two of the items are sold by third party sellers but shipped by us; therefore, the order does not qualify for the promo to be applied but I will make a one-time exception for you… let me tell you what I can offer…
Please go ahead and place the order… I will keep an eye on it and after it has been shipped, I will issue a $20 refund. Will that work for you?”
