NYC Newbies

Another blog post by Mr. Deals…

So Mrs. Deals decided to take a little vacation without me. A few weeks back she said decided she wanted a long weekend trip to the south. I was excited to hear that she was going, because I thought I was included in the plans but I was quickly mistaken. No biggie though, Mr. Deals always finds something to do.

This weekend I happened to get lucky. A buddy called me earlier this week and said he was going to be in NYC for the Global Citizens Festival in central park. Now, I should start by saying this friend is from Vermont and has never really spent anytime in NYC so he was pretty excited. Luckily his girlfriend has been here before and she was coming as well so he wouldn’t be totally lost.

Friday he got to town and I received a text message: “Dude – freaking out..So many people!” They had taken the train to Penn Station and were staying up by Columbus Circle. For those of you who know NYC, both are pretty busy areas. A few minutes later I got another message, this time it was: “Crazy cabbies!” I gave him a call to get our plans set up for the afternoon and his first question was: “Do you carry your wallet in your front pocket?” So within about an hour of them arriving a small town Vermonter was already freaked out by the big city (or he was just messing with me).

Truth be told, he adjusted to the chaos that is NYC pretty well. We spent some time on the Upper East and West sides and in Central Park for the concert (which had probably as many people in it at one time as the entire city of Burlington, Vermont). They did experience a crazy cab ride, with the cabby apparently yelling at another one as they were racing down an avenue. And most importantly for you travel nuts, they did experience an NYC hotel (the Holiday Inn Columbus Circle).

Whats always fun about traveling to a new city is experience it like the locals do, something only really possible when you know someone in that city. I’m always excited to show someone from out of town how I live in my hometown and it got me thinking, maybe there’s an idea for the blog. What do you think, maybe a ‘do as the locals do’ section?
